Dead Bands

So, we were talking about this in work the other day and I thought I would carry it over to you guys. If you could see one band today live in concert that is actually "dead" (Meaning, the original band member(s) are not there anymore, the ones who actually made the band famous, not the replacements), who would you choose? You can pick a single person too if you prefer that over a band, like Elvis or something. But the criteria is the band/person has to be missing an integral part, like when this person died the band pretty much fell apart at that point or were never the same.

I almost feel obligated to pick the Beatles, because my mom (and everyone) loved them so much and they were so iconic that I think it'd be awesome to be able to say I say them live, but deep down I would have LOVED to get to go to a Sublime concert. I love their older stuff, especially the 40oz To Freedom CD, and it would've been amazing to see them in concert, the real thing, with the real lead singer and everything.

Re: Dead Bands

  • Beatles, for sure! I love them. Though I do love Sublime as well. Good choices. I'd love to just go see just John Lennon too. So good.

  • I'd pick either the Beatles or Queen. I love them both.

  • Oh, gosh, this is hard.

I'd love to see the Beatles (for obvious reasons) and Sublime. I remember listening to Sublime CDs at slumber parties when I was in middle school. It would be amazing to see someone like Jimi Hendrix. And I'd love to see Bob Marley live. I guess if I had to pick one band though, I'd say Queen. I've loved them for as long as I can remember and it would be so cool to see Freddie Mercury perform in person.

I thought of Queen instantly. My son is a HUGE Beatles fan, so if he could go, I'd pick them.

    Honorable mention: Nirvana

Also, if I could go back in time to see a band in their heyday, it would be Van Halen or Bob Seger.

ETA: Bradley Nowell of Sublime had one of the best voices ever. I"ve often wondered if he had perfect pitch.

  • That's a really hard decision!

I'm going to show my total geeky-ness and say the Rat Pack :)

Second choice (and it kills me to put them in second) would be the Beach Boys.

Of course I wouldn't mind seeing Elvis in concert too but only if I could have a backstage pass to that one.

  • Queen, I would have loved to see Freddie sing live.  His performances that are taped seem so amazing

  • You guys are making awesome picks. I can't believe I didn't think of Queen. I loved them growing up. That would definitely make the choice harder.

  • Oooh, Fuzzies, I didn't even think of the Rat Pack!!

On a semi-related note, we were at a wedding last year where the groom loved Frank Sinatra, and the last song of the night (which his wife arranged as a surprise) was "New York, New York". All of the guests ended up in a circle around the bride and groom while they danced, doing a kick line. It was so fun.
  • The Eagles! They can count, right? The band broke up for quite some time, but they get together sporadically for shows. Now, the members seem to concentrate more on their solo careers and, well, retirement! Oldies but goodies ...

My backup band would be The Beach Boys. Even my 18 yo son is wild about them.

  • So I think it's official.. I must be the only person on the planet that can't stand the Beatles.. lol.

Either way, I'd probably pick Elvis, or Johnny Cash :) or Patsy Cline! Such hard choices!

  • Hmmm I think I'd have to pick Elvis. My grandmother loves Elvis so much, and she's the second most important person in my life that I'm curious to see what's so appealing about him to her, and what better way would there be than to see him in concert...
  • I would have to pick Queen.

  • I vote for a Woodstock Revival line up...

The Beatles, The Doors, Queen, The Jimmy Hendrix Experience, Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin), The Mamas and The Papas, Led Zeppeilin (with the late John Bonham), the original Black Sabbath line up, and maybe even a special appearance by Johnny Cash and June Carter.

This is a fun question, as music is my favorite indulgence. I've been so lucky to have seen so many amazing bands and performers already, due to my parents being equally as indulgent. They took me to some awesome shows when I was a kid and ever since I have continued the tradition and I try to see a couple shows a year.

I've seen; Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie (2x), Madonna, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime (with Bradley), No Doubt, Tori Amos (2x), The Dave Matthews Band (2x), Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, Moby, Radiohead (2x), Robert Plant, Ozzy Osborne, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Soundgarden, The Scorpions, Aerosmith, Prince, The Kills

I have yet to see Elton John, pictured below... but I hope I get the chance someday.

  • I'm so jealous that you saw Sublime, with Bradley. Was it amazing?

  • Honestly, I was a freshman in HS when I saw Sublime at a really small venue before they were a huge deal...

They're 40oz to Freedom album had just hit small time release on Skunk Records and it contained a ton of unauthorized samples (i.e. from other artists like Led Zeppelin mixed into some of their tracks) and some random audio and underground effects that were since removed from the album when it was re-released by MCA.

That record was a hot commodity at my school. I remember everyone was passing it around and going ga-ga over it. Then they announced they'd be playing the The Ventura Theatre and a whole bunch of us got tickets. It was pretty cool, although they didn't really sound that great live... compared to the other bands I've seen since, they were amateurs. They had that sloppy underground sound, but that's why we LOVED them!

I still listen to that old 40 oz album when I want a Sublime fix. It's a sound that's unique to So Cal... Long Beach especially.

  • Definitely the Beatles! And I would take my dad :)
