  I've seen it done both ways...groomsmen waiting up front, and groomsmen walking bridesmaids down the aisle.  Whatever floats your boat.
  
  As far as the kids go, I vote for whatever will get them up the aisle.  Kids (especially ring bearer/flower girl age) are unpredictable, so having someone like the mini bride escort them up the aisle is a great option.  I'd also recommend having their parent waiting at the front (out of the way) and take them to their seat (there is no way most little kids have the attention span to stand up front for the entire ceremony.)

  I was at a wedding that the groom did not want to stand alone up front before the ceremony started, so the guys stood up there with him-  the bridesmaids walked half way up the aisle and the groomsen met them there to walk the rest of the way together. Kind of nice if you cant decide which way to go!
  I personally would be nervous walking by myself as a bridesmaid....maybe ask what they feel?
