Getting in Shape

MFP Question

After a good solid month of getting back on track with exercise I relogged into MFP and my calorie count for a day with no exercise is and always has been 1200.  Does this number ever change?

Also how do I avoid all the excess carbs?  Most days when it is time for dinner I MFP is already showing a big red number.

I have been eating fairly well except for a couple days when I stop at McDonalds and get a small vanilla iced coffee before heading into work.

Breakfast has been usually plain oatmeal with some almond slivers.  If I don't have the oatmeal then it is egg white omlet filled with veggies.

Snack can be PB with celery, yogurt with fruit, ect.

Lunch is  a salad with mixed veggies, a little cheese, a couple of croutons but no dressing, w/ chix or turkey. If I don't have that then it is a whole bag of veggies steamed (usually between 150 - 250 depending on brand and veggies) with a little cheese and a pack of tuna fish.

Afternoon snack depends can be nuts, fresh or frozen fruit, pretzels.

Dinner varies depending upon if I have to work my part time job at night. If I don't have time to eat at night I will have a slim fast so I get some form of meal with protein. Otherwise I make a very balanced dinner and it is never over 500 cal.

Where can I cut carbs, or is it okay to be over due to the whole grains, fruit, and veggies.

Re: MFP Question

  • Doesn't sound like you eat too many carbs, but maybe your body is missing an essential nutrient? Everyone is different. My personal progress ramped up when I stuck to whole foods. Slim fast has so many chemicals and really no nutritional value, there are better options out there... I never count calories, foucus more on feeding your body correctly. Maybe some more leafy greens like spinach or kale!

It sounds like you don't eat a lot of carbs already. Honestly I find MFP over/under estimates a lot in terms of how much of a certain thing you should be eating. For example I am always in the red for my protein but according to MFP I should only be eating like 40g a day - that is not enough protein. As long as you are not exercising you should be staying in the 1200 range. If you are exercising make sure you are netting 1200 and not eating 1200.

I definitely don't think Slim Fast is the best substitute for your dinner. It has a lot of processed crap and I think those only have like 200-300 calories in them. Try making meals ahead of time and pack them so "being on the go" isn't an excuse.

  • Idealy I would love to lose 40 more lbs but I know that is not a realistic goal from now until my wedding in October (It took me over a year for the first 50).  Maybe just another 5 - 10 lbs because my dress just about fits perfectly now.  Currently I have my goal set at 1 lb a week and when I do excercise I make sure to eat all the calories back.

Thank you for the information I was just worried that I needed to try to cut more out of my new healthy eating life style
