Venue help?

I'm looking for an inexpensive venue in eastern ct for a October 2013 wedding. I would like to keep the cost around 30 per person or less. Any ideas ? I'm also open to locations in RI if anyone knows of anything in that area as well. Thanks !

Re: Venue help?

  • You may want to consider Meadow Brook Inn in Charlestown, RI. I've heard some great reviews about them, and they are very reasonable as far as their menu pricing is concerned. http://www.meadowbrookinnri.com/menus.html

You could also look into the Quonset O Club. It's a bit further out in North Kingstown, RI but is similarly priced. http://www.quonsetoclub.com/Index.html

I've heard that Wright's Mill Farm in Canterbury is affordable, as well, but I'm not sure if it would fit into your budget or not... you'd need to contact them for pricing. http://wrightsmillfarm.com/weddings/

    Good luck!

How many people?  Indoor/outdoor?  Ceremony on site?  What kind of menu were you thinking?  What does that $30 include ideally?

With that kind of budget, assuming you mean the total cost of the venue would be $30/person for food, venue, tables, chairs, linens, etc., I think your best bet is a Knights of Columbus Hall or a high school auditorium or something similar.  Check into local schools that might be near water or a pretty view or have a pretty garden.  Or a summer camp - what about YMCA Camp Fuller in Wakefield, RI?  It's got a beautiful view and a big ol' dining hall.  Sure, the decor is a bit non-standard with the campy decorations (kids paintings over the years and such) but I do know they rent it out. I don't know how many people you're having - 50 guests at $30/head is different than 300 guests at $30/head, even though it still works out per person, with more people you can typically go a bit lower as you cover the overhead cost of venue rentals and such already.

  • I'm thinking around 120 people, 30 per plate not including bar/dessert. I would like an outdoor ceremony on site. I've been looking into the Quonset O Club, their prices seem really reasonable but I haven't found much info on the grounds. I LOVE the look of Kinney bungalow in RI but it is way out of my price range :
  • I feel all your pain. I just went through all this. $30 a head, actually translates into $40 a head after taxes and tip, keep that in mind.
Try golf courses that do not offer a wedding package, thats what I did and got really gret pricing for the food and the venue. There are added costs because I have to bring things in that I want and it is going to leave alot for me to do, but I don't mind. I need to keep my whole wedding under $7000:)

  • Definitely check out the Meadowbrook inn in Charlestown.  They do a very nice job and the food is delicious.  The interior is a little dated unless they have upgraded but it is still a nice spot with a lot to offer.

How many guests are you expecting that will help us narrow it down.

    Sorry I missed that!

You may be able to find larger restaurants if you are open to that.  I know Spain in Narragansett does weddings but I'm not sure of their capacity.  Restaurants will generally be more cost effective.  There is also the Chester House in Westerly which I haven't been to in years but the inside was beautiful but maybe it closed, I can't find a website.

There is also the Haversham which I have heard really great things about:   http://www.thehaversham.com/westerly-ri-our-banquet-facility.htm. It is also in Westerly (I'm not as familiar with CT even though that is where our reception is) and use to be My Mary's.  The inside kind of reminds me of Kinney bungalow.  I'm not sure of the pricing at these places though, Meadowbrook in is definitely more affordable than most.  Keep us posted, GL!

    Those are great suggestions.

The Meadow Brook Inn accomodates up to 200 people and I believe you can have your ceremony right on site, so that could definitely be an option for you. As was mentioned, country clubs could also be a good choice for you... I came across a few in my search that were in your price range. I don't remember specifics of all them (we, too, have a small budget and looked at many options in the tri-state area of CT, RI, and MA before deciding). Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford was one of the most reasonably priced, though (quite a few entrees are under $30) and it is really beautiful: http://wannamoisett.memberstatements.com/tour/tours.cfm?tourid=82200 .

I also looked at Quidnesett Country Club and it was gorgeous and quite reasonable per plate, but they do have a minimum spending requirement... I think it's about 7,000 on a Sunday night and 10,000 on a Saturday unless you opt to do it during lunchtime which is much more affordable. We have a small guest list so it would not have been worth it for us.

You may want to head over to the RI Board and ask them, as well. They're really helpful and tend to have a lot of great recommendations. Even doing a general search of the posts will yield a lot of results for budget venues.
