Color Advice (to distract me from the mess that is the apartment)

So, we're back on track to an October wedding. We thought about May, but there's simply no way that we can move and get settled and then plan, plus we still don't know if training will be over by then, so October it is. Just have to set a date with a priest.

Color-wise I think I'm going with 2 reds, one more of a bright geranium and one that's a little more vermillion-y deep orangey-red. And orange because we both really want carved pumpkins as centerpieces. Yes, it's been done, but I think it looks really cool. Nothing Halloween-ish, just maybe designs or a monogram. Apparently a friend of mine went to a wedding where they used those fake carvable pumpkins to carve from photos, but that sounds like it could get expensive or needs skill. As an accent color, I'm thinking like a deep very golden yellow. I'm also wondering if maybe bits of either cream or deep navy blue would work, any ideas?

And, of course, one WWYD question about moving. I posted this in "rants" but my post seems to have disapeared. If we both drive to SA when our stuff moves, we can stay in the on-base hotel, but it doesn't allow pets, so we would have to pay to kennel them until we found a place, plus neither of them have ever been kenneled before. The other option is for me to return to my grandmother's house with the pets and not be part of the house/apartment hunting at all, other than the online research I'm doing now. And then drive out there with the pets once we have a place. I'd really like to be able to look at places, but the animals' welfare is most important.

  • OOO I love the idea of the deep navy blue with that deep orangey red.  I think you could do a lot with that.

That sucks about the pets.  That is a really hard choice.  Is it a long drive from your grandmother's house to where you are moving?  Have you thought about trying them out in a kennel?  I know ours love the kennel.  Well to be honest it is like a Spa for Animals.  They get to run and play and the people are totally obsessed with animals.  Roxie got sick and they even took her to their vet at not additional charge.  Some kennels will allow you to go and see the pets while they are there.
  • I like the idea of those warm colors with a cream! Personally, I think adding a blue to the whole mix would be a bit much. I also really like the pumpkin idea w/ a carved monogram! As for the pet situation...idk. That's a really tough decision. I would never want to kennel my Binxy kitty, but I'd also want a say in househunting...geesh idk!

  • Is there a way your FI could skype you or facetime you during each visit to the apartments or take pictures to send you so you have an idea. I can understand not wanting to kennel your pets and still wanting a say in the housing. How far is your family from where you will be at, is there a way you could live your pets there and then pick them up on your way back?

As for colors I think a cream accent would look gorgeous with it all. I'm sure you could make anything work, I love the fall colors, that I'm a sucker for! I'm sure no matter what you decide it will look great.

  • If I stayed with my grandmother the only way I could get any info would be my phone; I get picture messaging, but no data plan. It's probably about 12 hours-ish from SA, so it would be a long drive. As far as the kennel goes, I'd probably have to look up some that have good reviews and trust my instincts on it, there might be a base kennel, but I don't know what that would be like. We have to find a place by the 27th of the month before they put our stuff into storage. Our stuff leaves on the 11th, we'll leave here the 12th (later in the day) and get to SA by the 13th, our stuff should be there by the 17th.

  • I don't know about colors.I think cream would look great with those colors.

But I second amh in skype or facetime during each visit. My family moved all over the country when I was younger, (not military...) my dad would often video tape the house hunting expeditions and then either mail the videos or bring them back when he was done house hunting. It helped speed up the process of searching for a house.

  • I love the idea of cream with all the orangey reds! I think it would look beautiful! I don't really have anything to add to the pet conversation, I couldn't blame you for either choice.

  • the other ladies have given some great pet suggestions, and IDK what else I can add to that, but I do have to say- I have a friend that did an Oct wedding this year and they did the pumpkin centerpieces and they came out beatifully!! they actually used some of the pumpkin carving tool kits that you see and poked holes in the pumpkins and did monograms with their flowers on some of the ones in the buffet area. I really liked their idea to carve out some pumpkins, then put containers in them and serve foods/dips out of little pumpkins. It was so cute. I don't have any pics of that, but I do have pics of the pumpkins as centerpieces... and also you can kinda see from this pic that they had all the pumpkins that were centerpieces done the same way except for the one in the center of the head table (its in the far left of this pic) which they used pumpkin carving tools to poke holes in and covered in flowers (her colors were purple and brown).

here's a pro pic collage showing the pumpkin...

    okay, I'm done now.

Ohh I love that with the cream color for accents, I was thinking back along those lines too when I was looking at colors.  I was also thinking a plum color for accents if you wanted a cool color to offset the warm ones - just an idea!

As for house hunting, what my fiancee did was find a few houses, describe it to me over the phone and take a ton of pictures and e-mail it to me.  Not ideal, but it worked pretty well for us!  If you wanted to see them in person, is there anyone that you would trust to watch your dogs for you while you meet him out there to look? Maybe he could do some preliminary hunting, narrow down the possibilities and you just fly out for a weekend to finalize what you want?

EDIT: Sorry, pets! I for some reason thought you said dogs.  Also, if you use pumpkins one of the tips that I found is coating the insides/cut parts in vaseline so you can do it a little aheade of time and prevent rotting/"wilting" that happens when they get cut

  • Fire: I love those pumpkins so much I want to take them out back of the middle school and get them pregnant.

I think we're going to just narrow down to about 5 or 6 places to live online and then I'm going to trust FI to choose. We have a list of essentials, negotiables, and dream things that we agree on, so I think it'll work out. So I'll go to my gramdmother's for a week and then head out to SA when we have an apartment.
