Getting in Shape

My one weakness

Hi everyone and congrats to you for your big day! I'm just starting my get in shape and lose weight goal. But sadly like most people there's that one weakness. Mine is cola... So far it's the hardest thing for me to quit and I know it needs to go. Can anyone suggest juices or sparkling water for me to try so i can get this junk out of my life. I love apple juice , I'm trying to find variety so it's not just apple juice or water is my choice.

Re: My one weakness

  • If you've got the cash available, I'd get a SodaStream.  We got one for Christmas and it's been awesome.  I carbonate all kinds of juices so I can get my little :soda: fix.  cranberry juice soda = magic.  You can also buys soda water and add to juices.

Otherwise, when I was originally cutting out/back on soda, I first cut out the caffeine and after I was use to that I moved to to low sugar and caffeine free.  Now I'm 90% a water drinker but I do love my daily small glass of Ocean Spray light cranberry, and a glass of OJ with my big weekend breakfast.

Just be careful with juice.  Although healthier (IMO) than any soda, those calories and sugars add up.  You don't want to drink all your daily calories.
  • Try flavored water.  It's fizzy, has flavor and no calories.

  • Do you like tea at all?  I know it's not for everyone, and some kinds are quite gross, but I've really gotten into it lately.  Even with a bit of sugar or honey to sweeten it up a little, it's still got far less calories and sugar than regular soda, and you can get fruity tea, sweeter tea (love vanilla!), breakfast tea, herbal tea, caffeinated, decaffenated (or naturally caffeine free), etc.  It's a great variety, and a good pick me up for the morning or that mid afternoon slump.

  • I was able to switch from soft drinks to unsweetened tea and I was surprised that I got used to it within a couple of weeks.  I'll admit I didn't drink a lot of soda in the first place, though, only once a day at lunchtime.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Yeah, I agree that it does take a little getting used to.  I used to not be able to drink tea without a couple teaspoons of sugar, but I've now found some varieties that are great unsweetened.

This has been my strategy. I realized that the thing I loved most about soda was the carbonation, so switching to sparkling water has been the perfect substitute.

I really like La Croix and Mendota Springs brands (not sure if those are local only to the Twin Cities or not). Otherwise, I have also heard good things about the SodaStream.

  • I know how hard it is to stop drinking soda, I've been there in the past! A few nights ago, DH and I sat down and calculated how much money we spend on soda year and it came to be about $1,000 and that's only cases...so, if we tallied up 2 liters, 20oz's and sodas from restaurants it would be a lot more. Add that and how bad soda is we knew it was time to change. So, we've been drinking a lot of water and some juice. My favorite juice is Dole's Orange Pineapple Banana. Serving size is 8 fl oz & it's 120 calories, 10mg sodium, 310mg potassium, 30g carb and 26g of sugar. I drink a little bit when I take my vitamins and I have some in the middle of the day. Another good juice is pomegrante & I also absolutely love apple juice :). Something that I want to do when I have all the right ingredients is make smoothies! Maybe you could look into that?

I honestly don't miss anything about soda. When I had my last dr. pepper and my last pepsi I thought to myself 'why am I even drinking this? It doesn't even taste that good to me'. Also, it's nice to have a meal with water and not have to worry about extra calories from my drink. Good luck!

  • Thank you everyone for the great advice! I will definitely try the sparkling waters. And I do love tea. Trixie I think you are right I really like the bubbles that aare in soda. Again thank you all for your help!
  • Mmm those La Croix waters are yummy! I also love the brand Izze. I think most of them have like 70% juice and taste way better than pop IMO. Not sure on the sugar content but it gives the fizziness without an overload of all the crap in pop :-)
