Same gift twice at same wedding shower

I have my wedding shower coming up on Sunday and when I updated my registry today I noticed that two people have bought us the same thing! We were registered for one mixer & 2 have been bought.
I was wondering if anyone has hints on etiquette as to how to react to this at the shower when I open the second one? I don't want the people to feel bad.
I just appreciate their generosity & the fact that they're at the shower at all!
Thank you :)

Re: Same gift twice at same wedding shower

  • It happens and no worries.  Either they weren't paying attention to your list and the fact that someone already purchased it, or they were shopping around the same time and your list hadn't updated yet.

Just thank each person for their gifts and if it's anything like the showers I've been to, most people won't be paying attention to every gift that's opened.
  • This is a pretty common thing and really, most guests won't be surprised.  Don't make a big deal about it.  Act surprised and you might even be able to make a little joke (Looks like I'll be making lots of cookies and mashed potatoes!) when you open the 2nd one and thank that giver just as politely as you did the first.

  • You don't know for a fact that you will get them both at the shower.  If you do, just thank them both.  People will probably laugh about it.

  • Act exactly the same for the 2nd one as you did the first one, and don't mention that it's a double.  IMO most people don't pay attention the entire time you are opening gifts anyways, so a lot of people might not even notice.

  • I would also like to point out that with many registries, if a guests purchases something for you off your registry, they also purchase something for themselves, and they give the cashier the registry number everything will appear as purchased on your registry.  You may not ever see the second mixer because they may have purchased one for themselves or as a gift for someone else.

  • Thanks so much guys! I appreciate all the feedback :)
I'm just nervous for my shower but I'm sure it will be great. Thank you!!
  • At a friend's shower last year, I gave her a pizza stone and pizza cutter and so did another bridesmaid. Since the other bridesmaid and I had become friends, we were able to laugh it off, and sort of help the bride move along and not dwell on the duplicate. Personally, I was glad that I had also included a pizza cookbook because I know that even if she returned "my" pizza stone, there is so etching personal about my gift to her. But not everyone does that, so don't dwell on it. I think guests are aware that registries don't always update, or maybe they were shopping at the same time so it didn't give the system a chance to show it as fulfilled. Hopefully they'll include a gift receipt and you will be able to exchange one after the shower (just don't tell them whose gift you exchanged!)
  • I don't know....I kinda would really like to have another mixer, but that's because I'm nutty like that:)

However, if you're NOT trying to become the next "Cake Boss," simply acknowledge the second mixer as much as the first, genuinely thank both givers, and exchange one or the other for something that you perhaps did not recieve at your shower.

I also woudn't mention the duplicates in your thank you cards.  Each one should say "thank you for your generous gift. I'm looking forward to lots of baking" or something like that.  Don't say "Hey, thanks for the mixer.  I returned it for a crystal gravy boat.  Peace out!"

No big deal. My grandma and MIL both gave us some Rachael Ray cookware. 2 items were duplicates so I just exchanged them for other pieces in the set that we didn't get.
