Europe in August

My father and his girlfriend have offered to pay for our honeymoon, and we were thinking of going to Europe.  My FI is from Wales, but we don't want to turn the honeymoon into a visiting his (extremely large) family all over the UK.  We're thinking of staying away from the UK so it's not an issue for people (feelings getting hurt, etc)

We were wondering if people had suggestions of good locations during August?  We'd love to do France and Italy, but I know that both countries tend to have their own holidays during those times, so things may be closed in some spots and extremely busy in others.  France is my top choice, as I speak French, but we'd be interested in looking at maybe Portugual or Spain as well.  Even Germany and Switzerland could be a possibility...

Has anyone been to Europe in August?  Any recommendations?

Re: Europe in August

  • My friend and I backpacked for 2 weeks through France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and Austria in 2010. Even though, the normal residents usually are on holiday during that time, we didn't have any issues with touristy stuff or restaurants being closed. So if you want to go in August, go for it! I don't think you should let that change your mind.
  • I spent all of August doing the backpacking think in 2001. We went to all those countries & more. We had no problems with trains, touristy stuff, some non-touristy stuff, etc. Go. France is wonderful. Even better when you speak French! (which I hardly do)

FI and I were just in Europe this summer, we were there for 2 weeks and went to London, Paris, Cologne & Amsterdam. It was beautiful. I would definitely reccommend all those places. We went in September so it was a bit chilly but August is a great time to be going. Cologne is a really cheap place to visit and there isnt much to do there but still beautiful. You wouldnt need more than 2 or 3 days there. It's also a 2 hour train ride to Amsterdam.

I loved Paris, it was my first time there and was a really nice place to visit - so romantic. There is A LOT to do there too.

  • if it were me i'd go late sept/early october. avoid the crowds, the heat and the local vacays. it's also less expensive then.

  • I agree with Ali. August is going to be HOT and still very busy with tourists (which means more expensive). If you can, I'd wait until Sept/Oct
  • Hubby and I took our honeymoon in Europe in from the middle to the end of September. The weather was SO much better- mid 70s all week and the crowds weren't bad. We did Prague, Dresden, Munich, Vienna, and Bratislava. Loved all of them. Woudn't have changed a thing. These were also extremely affordable cities.

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions and recommendations!  It sounds like hot and busy, yes, but not impossible.

Thanks for the suggestions about September/October- in an ideal world that would work, but I teach so it's impossible to get time off in Sept/Oct.  I agree, though, it would be a much nicer time then!

  • I've been to Germany & Austria in August. Beautiful weather, but you need to plan your overnight accomodations in advance as it is vacation season. Not saying you can't find something on the fly, but you'll pay more or not always be able to stay in the area you want to.

We found some amazing little B&B places in the countrysides through Rick Steve's travel books. He lists local places he's been too and for alot of them websites/email address to contact the B&B owners to make booking easier.
