Hello all, I'm trying to finalize my budget and was wondering if you ladies might help me estimate the cost of a wedding cake.
Our reception venue has a deal with Buttercream where we won't be charged a cake cutting fee if we go through them. However I'm wondering if I'll end up saving more money by going somewhere else and paying the $125 fee anyway.
Can you share your vendor and price per slice estimate? Is that allowed on here?
I'm just trying to get a semi-accurate estimate so I'm not blown away and way over budget when I get to that point.
TIA!
Re: Cake Vendors & Pricing
If we go with Sam's Club cakes, we'll be looking at around $250.
If we go with PJ Murphys (www.pjmurphysbakery.com) we'll be at about $400. I think their other cakes start at $2.50/piece.

I had a Byerly’s cake. Not because I was on a budget, but because the expensive cakes often tasted gross. I love Byerly’s cakes, never seen them at a wedding, but every bit is always gone at grad or anniversary parties. We got the smallest three tiered cake they made (it still looked plenty big in pictures and in person when it was on a stand) then sheet cake for the rest (250 people total). On the teired cake we had fondant cake with upper-middle range of difficulties for the design. White frosting, or chocolate frosting, for the filling. I think we paid $800.
Now, it isn’t a supper fancy cake filling wise or size of tiered cake, but it looked pretty and it was all eaten.
I thought Buttercream wasnt worth eating and our bid was a little more then $3,000. Plus I wanted a whimsical cake and they don’t put any dyes in their frosting so we would have to have ribbon to add color.
Our vendor said there was a cake fee too, but we asked that they take it off since we were putting so much money into their food alreay. They did. Our wedding planner said that is a fairly common thing to get removed if you ask.
I wanted something very simple (pics are in my non-pro section in bio) and I got SO many compliments on the cake, people raved all night. A few people even asked me if I had two cakes because our cake looked like it was fondant but it they weren't served fondant. It was that smooth looking, I was very impressed with how it turned out. And it's good cake too...my all-time favorite is Wuollet Bakery but it was cheaper for us to go through Buttercream. And to me, it's just cake, I wanted to spend that extra money elsewhere in the budget.
