Wedding Dress Shopping

I'm taking a weekend trip to NYC with my mom, sister (Matron of Honor) and best friend (Maid of Honor) to go to Kleinfelds to go wedding dress shopping!!

This will be the first time that I'm trying on dresses and I'm both really excited and really nervous...white isn't the MOST slimming color in the world!!!

My question to you ladies is this: How did you know that your dress was **THE ONE**?!

Re: Wedding Dress Shopping

  • Have fun! And come back with pictues!
As far as knowing it was "the one"... Well, I didn't have that emotional moment where I cried like the baby I am, but I just... knew. I know that sounds lame but I felt GREAT in this dress, even though it was 3 sizes too small. Every other dress I tried on I compared to my dress. I didn't want to take it off. There was another appointment at the same time as mine, and the woman and her mom both told me how great the dress was on me.
  • It was the first dress that I didn't have a knitpick about. Hahaha. All my life I was the princess type, but when it came time to pick my wedding dress, the more I actually didn't like the princess dresses I tried on. I wanted to wear my dress, not the other way around. I was torn between to similar styles and the consultant asked me "if you had to walk down the aisle in 5 minutes, which would you pick." and there was no hesitation. I knew that dress was for me.

Funny you should say that b/c white actually is a very flattering color.  :)
I knew mine was "the one" when i began to compare it to the others i was trying on.  "Oh, this is pretty, but i really like the last one better" kindof thing.  One piece of advice that i'll give you (i wish someone would have given me before shopping) is to think outside of the box.  Just b/c you go into a shop with an idea of what you want, doesn't mean you have to stick with it.  Try on different styles and you may be surprised what you really LOVE.  Good Luck!!  :)

  • Definitely try different styles, but go in with an idea of what you think you might like.  I'm not the emotional shopping type, so there were no tears.  You might know it is the one the second you put it on, or you may go home empty handed but keep thinking about the particular dress.  Have fun!

  • My biggest piece of advice is don't be scared of white!

I haven't worn white since I was a kid because I think I look awful in white. And, granted, white basic t-shirts aren't the most flattering on a lot of people, but I fell in love with white wedding gowns when I went dress shopping and hated off white, ivory, and every other color they gave me.  Like pp said, don't rule anything out because you might be shocked.

I thought I wanted a big poofy dress with a full skirt, and ended up picking a form fitting dress with lots of rouching (sp?) that flattered my figure like nothing I've ever put on before.

I can't say that I knew it was "the" dress right away; I didn't cry tears of happiness, etc. But, after leaving the store empty handed and thinking about my top two and the wedding and picturing myself walking down the aisle, my number one dress just supersceded any thoughts I had about the other one and I haven't second guessed my decision.

  • i fell for another dress, and we went to DB to try it on. i LOVED it. but my mom wanted me to try on a couple more.
when i tried on one of them, my mom started crying, which made me cry. the dress was beautiful. and that was it!

  • Hooray for Kleinfelds! That sounds awesome.
Don't be afraid of white, and definitely try on different styles of dresses. You never know what you'll fall in love with!
    Good luck! :)

  • First of all have fun! I acutally just cancelled my Saturday appt at Kleinfelds because I found "the dress" (see previous post)

    Here is how I knew:
I actually never even got to try on that dress. The only sample they had was a size 4. I called all over and noone else even carried the dress.
Anyway- I knew it was the one beacuse every dress i put on after it i compared to it. I didn't get that overly emotional feeling like you see on TV all the time- i just saw it and thought it was incredibly beautiful.

I also know that i can not wait to hve that dress in my posession.
like, i think about it constantly, and owning it and having it in my house- so much so that i want to have it hanging up in my room when i get home. basically, i obsessivley think about the dress.

Just know to try on different things. I really wante d avera wang style, really big, organzay tons of fabric dress. As soon as i tried that style on, it looked horrible on me, it was heavy and super hot! (i am having an august wedding). I found that lighter fabrics, ruching, and little details- vs hugeover the top dresses made of tons of fabric suited me better. I wanted to wear the dress, I didn't want hte dress to wear me.

Also, the consultants can't know everything about you within 2 minutes of meeting you. Be specific. If you don't like a dress, explain why. I had to learn that this was the best way to get my point across. Instead of just saying "i dont like that dress" I would try to say things like "I don't really care for that dress bceause I don't like beading around the bustline, and i prefer a train".--- this helps them narrow down what you are looking for. So that they don't just bring in another dress that is similar to the one you didn't like.

    Gluck!!!

  • Welcome!  *hugs* You'll do fine!  Check the stickies for dress shopping tips :)

I didn't know in the store - I was stuck trying to decide between two dresses.  But over the next two days, every time I thought about that trip, I thought about the same dress.  Eventually, I realized that even if I didn't understand why I loved it, and it wasn't the style I was expecting to like, I couldn't get it out of my head, and that was answer enough.

  • I bought mine today!!! It was my first shopping trip and I went home with it (or, it went to my sister's place because I live with my fiance and I would probably be peeking at it a lot if I had it here and he might see!) I knew it was the one when I wore it the longest, compared the ones I tried on after it to it, and eventually when I had to try it on "one more time-" and then didn't want to take it off. Also, I could not stop smiling, lol, my face hurt by the end. It's kind of exactly what I thought I wanted, lace and organza and beading and tiers, but even though it's fancy it's somehow never over the top and too busy. I wear it and it doesn't wear me. Not to mention it was a $1250 dress that I never would have even tried on except it had been marked down to $449. Have fun- even though there was only one that they could zip up on me, I still had a great time. And, hey, I get to have a gorgeous corset back put into my dress because it doesn't close! Having a great consultant and supportive people there made a big difference; my mother and sister were really great and the staff was really fun and helpful and not at all pushy. Good luck!
