Name/Social Security Change-Which is First?

Ladies, I know this question has been asked before but I can't find the archives for past posts.  This new format is taking me a bit to get used to.  I know what I need to do, the only thing I have conflicting answers on is which one to get first, your ss card updated first or your drivers license?  Thanks in advance!

If I remember correctly it's your SS first. Then DL, then everything else.

Apple, funny, I just asked my co worker who got married recently and she told me she had to get her DL first, the social.  I'm back to square one, lol.

I got my DL first, then my SS card.  Went back to back on Thursday.  Took my marriage license to the DMV, then went to the SS office with my temporary license and marriage license and they looked at both.

Steph, that is exactly what I was thinking I needed to do.  Perfect!  I want to go during lunch and get it taken care before the holidays.  Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure you can do either one.  I did my social and then my DL.  I don't really think it matters.

You can do your DL without even having to change your social. Some people never legally change their name, they just change it on their DL. So that means you can do your DL first!

I have changed my Social Security, but not my driver's license. I'll get around to it at some point...

Ok let me ask you this, what if your DL will be another state license?  Right now my DL is Texas, but I'm a student in KC.  Once he moves up here we will switch everything to Missouri.  Do I have to switch my DL with Texas and then switch it with Missouri, or can I just switch it with Missouri?

You can probably just switch it in Missouri with your marriage license and SS card. I'm pretty sure in that instance you really need to change your name with the SS office.

I believe you can switch it whenever you want. It would probably be easier in  your case to wait until you transfer everything and get it changed on your new Missouri license. Or you could switch it in Texas, get a new TX license and then get your Missouri license.

Ok, I was an overachiever today.  I went on a long lunch break and went to the DMV and had my license updated and then went straight to the Social Security office and updated my social.  It was easy, took about 2 hours total.  All I took to the DMV was my marriage license and my old DL.  They will give you a temporary paper license.  Once you get that, you have to get your SS updated within 24-48 hours, at least that is what the Plano DMV told me.  All you need for the SS office is your marriage license and your DL.  Hope this helps!
