Making homemade apple butter and jams

Has anyone done this yet? I want to know how hard it is and how expensive it ended up being. Mom is confident we can handle it but I'm not as good in the kitchen ;-)

i have a co worker that has a yearly apple butter festival that consists of lots of people, waking up super early one day, heating a huge pot with water under a fire, and it takes all day to make it. deff an all day event. not sure how long it would take in a kitchen. moms do know best tho- usually...haha.

I make apple butter.  It takes about 24 hours from step one to ready-to-eat for a yield of 6 pints.  You have to wash, cook, smash to remove peels (better wehn cooked w/ peels on) then cook in the slow cooker for 8 hours.  After that, then you can them which doesn't take too long but then the jars have to sit overnight.
I don't mind doing it every now and then (my FIL loves apple butter) but there's no way I would tackle that for favors.

That does sound like a cute and unique favor! If your mom is willing to help and thinks you can do it go for it... I would do a trial run with a few just to make sure it is possible

I came on this board to ask the same question! We are havnig an October wedding and apple butter is one of my favorite things so we were also thinking about doing this! I was thinking about trying to buy apple butter in bulk from a local apple orchard and putting it into smaller mason jars. I'm not sure how expensive this would be though.

We are doing homeade jam for wedding favors... It's really not all that expensive. We bought 120 half pint jelly jars at a local store. The total cost for the jars was around $80. We bought all the strawberries needed when they went on sale for $1.00. The other "ingredients" needed to make jam are not that expensive. We are now working on finding a cute way to decorate the jars!
