Passports

THis is probably a silly question but Im still confused over passports.

It will be the first time my fiance and I will apply for passports and we are going to get them soon (even though we probably have enough time) just to be safe. We are leaving for our honeymoon on Sunday, our wedding will be on Friday so if we purchase the tickets with my maiden name and then my passport says my maiden name will we be fine going on our honeymoon? I know you have a year to change your name after you get your passport. But how long does it take for your marriage license to go in affect? I'm just really confused and I looked up on the website about it and that didn't help. I guess to simplify the question, wil I be fine with my maiden name on my passport and ticket even though I got married a couple days before?

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Passports

  • Your tickets have to match your ID, plain and simple.  If your passport has your maiden name on it, your tickets need to as well.  Your name change doesn't take effect until you go to the Social Security office with your certified marriage license no matter when you got married.
  • Just because you get married doesn't mean that your name magically changes.  I'm married and I'm still legally my maiden name

No name changes take effect until you walk into the Social Security Office and tell them you want to change your name.

You've don'e everything correctly (tickets and passport in maiden name).  Change everything once you get home.  Happy Honeymoon!
  • Ditto PP's.  The act of getting married doesn't automatically change your name (as many women keep their maiden name anyways), so it has no effect on your travel.

Depending on your state, it can take up to 30 days for you to even receive your certified marriage license, during which time, you are still legally your maiden name.  The only point at which you will legally have changed your name is after you change it with Social Security.  After you change it with SS, you can change it on your IDs, banks, etc.

  • you need to send the official marriage license in with your passport and change request to chagne the passport from maiden to married which can take a few weeks. get your passport in maiden name now, book hm in maiden name, change passport to married after hm.

  • Unless you get your name legally changed prior to applying to your passport, you will have a passport with your current name listed.  The name on your ticket has to match your gov't issued I.D. (driver's license and/or passport), which will be your current name.

    Did I miss something?
  • I knew it wouldnt magically change I just wasnt sure if I had to do anything specific.

    Thanks for your help!
