Stretch Marks...Help?

I've never had stretch marks before but have recently just gotten them on the sides of my legs close to my thigh region. I'm assuming that I got them from recent weight gain but was very surprised, it practically happened over night. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get rid of them? Or is that even really possible? Help :(

Re: Stretch Marks...Help?

  • There are some creams out there, such as Mederma, that can help with the appearance of scarring and stretch marks. I have never used them myself, but have heard good things about that brand. My stretch marks have generally faded, since I've had them since 8th grade (8 years ago). They went from a purple-ish red to a pale cream color, just lighter than my skintone.

You can also see a dermatologist about more expensive treatments.

  • Girl, I totally empathize. I'm actually very thin, but anytime I gain weight AT ALL it goes straight to my thighs, and within the last 6 months I've noticed I've gotten quite a few stretch marks in the same area you're talking about. I think its more common than you think! I've been using StriVectin...got it from Amazon. Its kinda expensive, but I've noticed quite a difference in the color. Good luck!

  • I feel your pain!  I have them on my stomach and my breasts (ugh!--I'm a 34DD and developed very early and very quickly, so I've had them for years).  I will say stretch marks DO fade all by themselves, but it is a bit of a process.  My suggestion would be to keep your skin moisturized and to try a topical treatment like Mederma.  If that doesn't work for you, you could consult your dermatologist.

  • I developed fast too and have them in the same spots as SCogs18. They do become much less noticeable over time.
  • I have a ton of them all over my rib area so don't feel bad. They are ugly and nasty but oh well I am not a model.

  • Oooo I first got them on my thighs and boobs when I "bloomed" during puberty and they faded to the point where they're hardly noticeable now, BUT after having 3 children my stomach looks like a road map to nowhere and I got more on the upper front portion of my thighs (this didn't happen with my first 2 children, just the last so it kinda shocked me!) Luckily, I'm pale and once they fade, they're hard to spot. Nothing can get rid of them, since they are scars, but you can take care of your skin. Keep it moisturized and hydrated. I never invested in scar creams (like Mederma or StriVectin) but I've heard they help the scars to fade quicker than OTC lotions. I use a vitamin E rich lotion and apply it daily. It helps a lot with the tone and texture of the skin.
  • An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... They won't go away, but they will fade.
I too got them when I was going through puberty. On my boobs, hips, thighs, butt, going up my back and straight across the area where my back and butt meet. They have faded a lot over time, now they are pale lines just a shade lighter then my skin.

There isn't really a cheap cure for them. You can try the creams but that will only fade them. At one point I won a gift card to a laser hair removal place and instead of getting my hair laserd off I had them microdermibrasion my stretchmarks. They said that with enough sessions they would go away completely, I think I did 6 sessions and they are still visible though greatly reduced in appearance. You might be able to have them laserd off too, but not cheaply!

What I've seen for prevention is to keep your skin well hydrated, by drinking water and put lotion on daily. Also, take your vitamins. Vitamin C is supposed to be good for skin... Also, not gaining weight (i know, easier said then done!)

Don't feel too bad about it. :) Most people end up with stretch marks at some point in life.

  • Vitamin E oil is really good as well. It is probably not as convenient as creams because it can be a little greasy, but maybe you could add that to a cream for night time use or something. I've got to start up a regimine myself before summer.
  • I'm right there with ya. I was a DD at 13 and I had deep, dark purple stretch marks for a long time. Thankfully, they did fade and I never thought about them. That is, until I stopped cheerleading in college. I gained approx. 20 lbs in a year and then I saw a tiny little stretch mark that seemed to get a lot bigger overnight. I've been putting lotion on legs (ankle to inner thigh), on my boobs and stomach (rubbing in around the stretch marks) and I think they faded quicker. I use a high moisturizing lotion.  I'm cheap cheap cheap....a spa for me is a $15 mani. lol
