  you ask just like you would any other guest. you send an invitation. we don't know our priest that well either and will be sending an invite. i expect that they get invited to most receptions.

  This. Send an invitation. They tend to decline coming to the reception, but you still have to send them one. :)

  Send them an invite. He will either accept or decline. That's what we are doing with the Deacon that is marrying us and his wife.

  he gets a formal invite, just as any other guest, and he also shoudl get an invite to the RD.
  
  if he doesnt know you that well, he'll most likely decline.  but its proper to invite him to both.

  Wow...so glad I came across this post because I wasn't planning on inviting our priest to the wedding reception since we've only been attending our church for a year and hadn't really gotten to know anyone.  Thanks for the info :-)
