Do I really need a videographer?

I figured I would get a videographer for my wedding, but never particularly had my heart set on it.  To me, pictures are more important.  The cost of rentals is over what I budgeted for.  Should I bother with a videographer, or is it overkill?

We are not having one.  We just don't really think we'll have a burning desire to watch that again.

Adding a  videographer was a very last minute decision for us... and one of the best decisions we made!  Our pictures are amazing but they just don't compare to actually watching the day unfold.. hearing the words spoken, seeing the love and joy on our faces, watching all the parts of the day that we didn't get to see because we were busy elsewhere.
You don't need to spend a lot.  We paid a semi-pro $400. We got a 45 minute video of the day inlcuding the entire ceremony and then our first dance in its entirety.  It was perfect and we've watched it at least 8 times in the month and a bit that we've had it ;)

I think it's a great idea. I mean even if you just have a relative with a camera shoot it, it's better than not and wishing you had.

I think it depends on who you are.  You definitely don't "HAVE" to have videography.

Being huge photo/video nerds ourselves, having videography was a non-negotiable.  In fact, when my best friend cut video from her budget, DH filmed her wedding for her.  After watching their video, the groom said "I cannot believe we almost didn't have this.  I feel every emotion over & over as I watch the film".  They are romantic and sappy like that.  I'm not sure they would have actually regretted not having the video, but once they saw it, they were so thankful to have it.

I think others are just far less visually / video-driven.  I think in a way you get what you pay for.  A straight video tape of the day on a tripod may not be something you watch again & again.  But some of those 3-5 minute wedding day highlights on Vimeo -- they're not even my own wedding and I tear up when I watch them.  I think cinematography and editing matters so much in terms of the final feel, which of course also drives up the cost a bit.

    Just my $0.02.  Good luck!

We're definitely having one. The company we hired does a short film and then gives you a disc with all of the standard videography. I just couldn't imagine having the day go by without being to able to go back and relive. I'm psyched to have the film part because it's not such a long, drawn out thing.

Totally agree with this! I've wanted a videographer almost from the very beginning but my FI didn't want to spend the money on one. Then I watched the video from my cousin's wedding from last year and begged my FI let us get one. FI was still no go UNTIL I found a vendor whose work he really liked.  I  showed him videographers at multiple price points. He didn't like the work of the lower-priced videographers. He felt like it would be a waste of money unless we went with someone whose work we would be completely happy with. So now he's gone from not wanting a videographer to being okay with spending $1000 on one.

I did not have a videographer and I regret it.  Though I don't think I'd watch it a hundred times, knowing I can never see my ceremony again is hard to live with.

We didnt have one, but we did buy a small camcorder before the wedding and have H's aunt record the important stuff..ceremony, first dance, etc. Im happy we did it that way, we will prob not watch the videos very often.

We decided that we would not have one to try to save money, but in the weeks before the wedding I was really regretting not getting one.  So I started trying to find a videographer at the last minute, and found someone to do it the week of the wedding.  I still haven't got the video yet, but am so happy that we did book him.  Like many brides say, the day was a blur for me, and I can't wait to relive the moments on the video.  Even just watching it once will be worth it for me.  My family and husband are so excited to see it too.  Also, I wasn't thrilled with how my professional photos turned out, but it is a nice consolation to know that I have a video on the way...

We want one for our wedding. I think its a great memory to have and share with family and friends who are not able to make it to the wedding because they are too far or business with work. A lot of my FI family wont be able to travel for the big day.

I absolutely regretted not having videography for my wedding. Doing it as a profession, I felt like I couldn't hire anyone... it was quite sad really. I really wish I would've though... I had a bride recently e-mail me, telling me she was sooo upset because she couldn't find her DVD. Luckily, I still had an old copy (from 2007) and sent one out to her... and she was so overcame with joy she cried! So you might not think you'd want it, but it's better to, at the very least, have a friend tape it. You WILL want to see it one day.
