AW: I'm getting my ring!!

Confession. I've been on here as a poser of sorts for a month or so, with no official engagement to speak of yet. We're in planning process, have a date set, etc., but a ring will be on my hand and an announcement made in September. So here's the AW:

We've been ring shopping and kicked it up seriously this weekend. On our first outing a few weeks ago I found "the One," but it was early in our shopping and we both wanted to keep browsing, plus discovered it was way out of our price range. I'd been looking at others desperate to find something I loved as much and was a more reasonable price, but just kept dreaming of this one (literally sometimes!)

Last night we stopped back in to see if it was as wonderful as I remembered (it was!), so we spent time negotiating a way to make it work. By the end of it he was excited to go ahead at the higher end of our budget. We decided to design one slightly smaller, it a different metal, with a trade in diamond. I’m getting the ring of my dreams! And in case I’m not abusing my AW moment enough, he plans to propose on my b-day trip to Italy.

We'll be setting it up slightly higher to fit a straight band under, and perhaps rounding out the corners to match a cushion stone.

The ring is very pretty OP.

The bolded part is what I don't get.  I've seen this written in a couple posts on TK.  what am I missing?  You bought an engagement ring together, you have a date picked out.......why is he proposing at a later date?  Is that just a formality?  I truly don't understand it.  We went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago and during the ceremony the pastor was repeating some story from the couple's life.  This couple had picked the ring, picked the date, picked the venue and then he proposed 3 months later at Christmas?  Why didn't he just propose right from the beginning?  Maybe I'm too old...... <sigh />

Yes, it's a mess of confusion, but I suppose things are exactly traditional for us.  I also bought a dress yesterday!!!! (J.Crew Avery, I think there's a pic in my profile)

It's always hard for me to explain my relationship on here, so I'll skip the details, but here's some of it.

We've only been together 3 months and our divorces aren't final. (GASP - this is why I don't elaborate, there's always opinions, especially the 2nd time around).  So I feel like by waiting a bit I'm giving my family time to get to know him and used to the idea of us (that, plus we're different races, my dad needs some time..)

Also, I just really wanted to pick out my ring. We're choosing a diamond this week, and it will take another 5 to do the custom work. The Italy trip is just because we're going and it would be a great setting. Even though I know it's coming, he's planning that w/o me as he's always wanted to do something romantic and "surprising".

Bottom line, yes, I think many people make more of the decision together, and it's just a formality and tradition.

LOL - I still don't "get" it mfeo but thanks for your explanation.  I'm guessing in your case with what you've written, it makes sense.

BTW - our divorces were not final until we had been dating each other for about 3 years.  H's because his xW was a hosebeast about it, and me and xH......well, he was waiting for me to come to my senses and come back to him.

BTW, I don't "get it" either.  But I don't get a lot of stuff here on TK; it's what keeps me coming back.  I just never know what I might read next.  I find it very entertaining.  Sorry, rambling ...</font>

    I get it!

Even though its the second time around you still want to have a lovely/romatic story and Italy makes a great story.  My BF has had the ring we picked for a few months and I can only hope that the end result is both engagement and a great story to share with friends and family.  :)

Does anyone remember Charlotte and Trey from Sex and the City?  He said "alrighty" to her unintended proposal but she changed the story to be a proposal in front of Tiffany's.  It's kinda the same thing.
