Prenatal Vitamins

So I went to the doctor for a regular check up a couple of months ago and I told her about how we may start trying next summer. My doctor recommended that I start the vitamins now. I was surprised, but okay. I got the spring valley prenatal vitamins and I have been so afraid to try them. I hear stories about people feeling sick from the vitamins. It says to take with a meal. I was thinking of taking it with dinner so I can be asleep and not experience nausea, but my doctor said I may feel sick in the morning because my stomach will be empty. So breakfast? I usually just have a bowl of cereal, will that be enough? Anyone have experience with this? Any advice/recommendations? I know I'm probably over thinking this, but I have an irrational fear of being sick (I know I'll have to get over it).

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I've heard to take them at night so you do not have the nausea during the AM...
  • Booo..I thought you were pregnant when I saw this. :p

I would think a decent bowl of cereal would be sufficient.

I think this is just a case of try and see what works best for you, unfortunately. I take medications that make me feel nauseated in the morning - because lying in bed and feeling like my dinner is going to come back up is not a pleasant time.

  • Why am I so afraid to start?!?! I suppose I'll try on a Friday with dinner so if I get sick, I won't need to worry about going to work!

  • With food at breakfast or lunch is probably best, but honestly I don't think its as big of a deal as you may think. They might make you a little nauseous, but probably not. They are vitamins and aren't anywhere as strong as say a birth control pill. I have taken them at all times of the day and I was fine.

  • I have taken them in the past to make my hair and nails grow faster and stronger (can't say I ever noticed a difference) and never experienced much, if any, nausea. I would try to take them and see how you feel, they're really not that bad IMO.

  • I had an horrible experience with prenatal vitamins. I had to take two flintstone vitamins instead. I would take it after dinner. It would suck if you took it in the morning and felt like crap all day.
  • I take a multivitamin now at night with dinner. Sometimes they upset my stomach if i take them in the morning. My doctor told me to switch to prenatal about 6 months to a year before trying to get pregnant.

  • Vitamins just make me feel yucky in general.  I have to make sure I eat and drink a lot of water when I take my multi vitamin.

I think some people feel sick on prenatal because they are already prego and feeling the affects of that and the vitamin just makes it worse.
  • I take mine at night right before I go to bed and I have never had a problem with them.  I am also one who usually does get queasy with that kind of stuff.  I think I take the same brand that you bought too.

  • I'm taking Women's vitamins right now, they're almost identical to the ones marketed as "prentatal". They make me feel really sick if I take them before eating. It doesn't make a difference what time of the day it is for me though. I have found that it I feel better if I completely finish my meal (usually breakfast) before taking it.

I would take them at night if you're worried about it.  I throw up if I take almost any vitamin (with or without food) except the adult gummies.  If your prenatal brand doesn't work for you, see if there is another version (powder for water bottles, gummies, etc.) since a lot of time it's the coating on the vitamins that makes you sick.

  • Hmmmm... Thanks for the advice, ladies!! I think I will try taking them with dinner and see from there. Maybe I'll just start after I finish with work for the summer so that way I can adjust if needed! We finish at the end of this month.

  • I've been taking them on and off for a couple of years now, and just always take them before bed. I've never had a problem, and I've used a couple of brands. Right now I am using the generic Target brand.

  • I took them at bedtime both times I was pregnant so that they wouldnt make me sick.  I get horrible morning sickness though.  I still take my daily vitamin at night bc I think they are easier on my stomach that way.
