Poll: how do you feel about babies?

(and um... no this isn't inspired by my visit to see my four day old nephew yesterday.  um... promise).

not all children are cute, and not all couples are meant to have children.  i'll leave it at that!

I don't go nuts for newborns. A lot of my friends want to hold them and coo over them, and I'm the lone girl saying, "Oh, yeah, cute ... what time do the Giants kick off?"

I don't really go nuts for older kids, either, but I find them cuter as small toddlers when they can walk and babble a little bit. The kids around age 18-24 months are the ones that tug at my ovaries.

Most babies are pretty cute, but some definitely aren't! Particularly if they have an unpleasant demeanor to them/cry a lot.

I like toddlers more. I think the cutest age is around 2-4.

I don't like holding people's babies! It's so fricken awkward!  I don't know, I'm always afraid of dropping or hurting a newborn. I love kids too, but I just don't want to be in the position to hold them, ESPECIALLY if they start crying and then I feel like some sort of horrible oger that made the kid cry.

My sister's older child is now 4 and a half, and I've had a much better time relating to her for the past few years because I like being able to interact.  4 day old nephew was cute, but he slept for all but like 2 minutes during the hours that we were there.  I didn't see the point of holding him because he wasn't awake and doesn't know me?  And when my mom and my sister kept saying "Hi handsome" to him, it sounded wrong to me because I say that to my boy kitten all the time.

So I think what I learned is that I will hold/speak incessantly to anyone's cat, regardless of ability to understand/state of consciousness, but I can't do that to human babies.  I'm wired weirdly.

Victoria- I really don't think you're weird. I seriously love kids, but I just don't interact like that with them.

I guess there's some sort of pressure when parents are watching. I'm much better with kids when I'm just babysitting and hanging out with them. I don't feel like I have to "put on a show."

Uppereast I am the same as you. If I see someone's dog or cat I'll go running up to it and pet and talk it.  I see a baby and I'm just like uhhhh ummm hello.

I'm currently trying to suppress bad baby fever right now.  I think part of the reason it's gotten so bad is because there are NO babies in either me or DH's family.  The last baby was DH's niece, who is now 5.  I haven't held a baby in years and it's starting to get to me!

Everytime I hold a kid I get 10 people saying, "You'll be next!" It just irritates me, LOL.

Tiff, I'd be horrified!  People know better than to say something like that to me :)  Luckily I don't really have many friends who have babies, so my sister's babies are the only ones I normally interact with, and I have much more affection for them on the one hand, but am perfectly happy to play bratty (30 year old) little sister and pout and protest if she tries to make me hold or talk to the sleeping baby.  We'll have a very nice relationship I'm sure, but I'm sure for now he'd prefer to be held by his mom.

I love babies and I always want to play with them.  But I'm pretty awkward when it comes to holding them.

We know quite a few people that had babies this year and it definitely gives me baby fever.  But we definitely have to wait until I'm done with my actuary exams to have kids.  I'm hoping I will be done soon!

I'm the same way ... I always want to play with or hold someone's pet, but I really don't want to hold their baby.

lol Tif, like you hold the baby and you'll get pregnant!

I'm a little akward around babies too. I think it's weird when people make all those silly noises and stuff, so why would I want to act like that? I hope we'll have kids of our own someday, but not in the near future at all.

Well I have a two year old now but before my son, I was so scared to hold a baby. I never changed a diaper before, I was never really around kids so I had no idea how to even take care of them. When I found out I was pregnant, I was so scared because I really had no clue what the heck I was doing. But when you have your baby everything just comes together and you have that mother instinct in you.

i love babies/kids.  with that said, I don't love ALL babies/kids.  Some just aren't cute, or they gross me out.  like at brandon's school - there are these two boogery kids that i never want to go near.  I"m mean, i know, but i can't help it.  wipe your kids noses! and keep them home if they have green snot!

I was just talking about this to Linette tonight....how I don't go gaga over babies like some.  I think most babies are cute but I just don't feel the need to hold them constantly and make an effort to entertain them.  I can handle them just fine...I can one arm a newborn no prob but I generally don't unless the baby belongs to someone close to me.
