BF and I received money from his parents for Christmas and BF suggested using it to get a light fixture for our dining room. I was pretty surprised that he offered that, cause I don't think home decorating is an interest whatsoever of his.

Anyway, we have a house that is about 100 years old and are trying to find something that fits in with the age of the house but with a modern twist to it.

I fell in love with this from Pottery Barn at $299 which is too much. http://www.potterybarn.com/products/bellora-chandelier/?pkey=cchandeliers

However, BF found this on overstock.com for $186

What do you ladies think?

Do you think I'd get sick of the glass balls on it?

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

They look almost exactly alike! Or is that the point? As far as I can tell, the only difference is one is bronze and the other is iron.

I like them both. Since they look nearly identical to me, I would go for the cheaper one. But I think you defintely achieved your goal of wanting a modern twist. I think the little glass balls are very cute. They look like bubbles.

I like. If you got sick of the glass they look easy enough to remove/replace with something else.

Other options = IKEA maybe?

Bside - Them looking alike was the point, I was surprised that I could get something so similar for $100 cheaper. I just wanted other women's views on the light fixture, BF trusts my judgement but thinks I'm odd sometimes in my tastes.

i love it!! i always like to have little bits of "unique-ness" around the house, and i think this is just darling. if i matched the rest of the the fixtures in our new house, i would seriously think about showing it to my FI... however, it doesn't and we have a perfectly good hanging light fixture in our dining area.. for now.

do you have any other options, or do you really love this one?

I saw this at ikea - http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20089464

It's cute, but when I was house hunting someone had this in their walk in closet. So, don't know if I want it in my diningroom because it'd be too small. However, I do really want a walk in closet with a chandelier in it.

The rest seems maybe too modern because all our furniture in the dining room are antiques.

I like #1 & #2 better than 3. I'm not a fan of the shades on #3.

Awesome, it wasn't my eyes playing tricks on me!

I like the one from Overstock, then. But that's just because I'm more partial to the iron finish than the bronze.

Coco - I do really love that one, but I'm open to suggestions. We are replacing a ceiling fan that is very crappy (yeah for rough houses), so I can play and not feel guilty whatsoever.

Hazel, I love the ones in your OP. I'm pretty sure the one on Overstock IS the one from Pottery Barn. That's what I'd go with.

Our house is about that old, too--1881--and I love blending the old with a modern twist, too! I might just have to spend a little time on Overstock today, hmm.

You're definitely inspiring me here!

P. S. Speaking of blending the modern with the traditional, this is one of my favorite chandeliers ever, by James Moder:

The price has come down on it, but it's still a leeeeettle expensive at $617 (lowest price I found). Ahhh, fantasies.

Hazel, I love the one you showed from Overstock. I don't like lampshades on candlabras because they're difficult to clean and end up looking dusty. But the iron-cast one is absolutely gorgeous and totally classic/timeless.

I really like them. I think the balls look cool and make the fixture unique. But as someone above mentioned, if you get sick of them, it looks like they'd be easy enough to remove.

Cate & Paige - I'm not a fan of shades either, I've never had to deal with them though.

Marley - We will have to compare decorating notes! My style is modern country pretty much, so it suits the house well. I do love that style of chandelier that you showed. I had already shown something similar to BF and he vetoed it.

Have you looked at Lowe's and Home Depot? That is from Lowe's ($88) and I didn't realize they had that many options.

I like the first two. Pottery barn is my all time favorite store to look at. I just wonder how much of a pain they'll be to clean...but I assume thats just a chandelier thing. *shrug*

I really like the first one from overstock (not a fan of the one with the shades). If you ever get tired of the glass balls, you can take them off.

Totally. :) BF and I are in the process of painting and redecorating. He owns the house, and until a few months ago, he lived here alone for 5 years. We're slowly getting rid of the "single dude" colors, thank goodness.
