Wedding Insurance

I've been looking into getting wedding insurance and wondered if any of you did or plan to?  I'm not very concerned with a vendor backing out or going bankrupt, though the protection from that is a plus.  I'm mostly concerned with a death in the family (really long story short, my sister's health is questionable at best and doctors don't know what the problem is, she's been in and out of ICU a lot lately) and the wedding insurance is supposed to cover death or sickness of anyone "essential" to the wedding.  Well I consider my sister and MOH essential, and in the situation where she were to get very ill and/or pass away, I would probably want to postpone/cancel the wedding.

Basically, I think it's a safety net, and I wanted to know where you purchased it and if the internet sites are legitimate.  Any recommendations?

Sorry to be such a downer.  I hate that I even have to ask about this.

I think its a good idea. If you know that there's a possibility that you may have to postpone your wedding it might be smart to do so. Im sorry you are in this kind of circumstance, and I hope that your sister gets better soon. Sorry im no help with recommendations.

I don't want to sound callous.  And know that I haven't looked into this at all.

Be sure you read the fine print about who's considered "essential".  I can imagine that companies may consider the bride, groom and person performing the ceremony the only essential persons.

I'm thinking on the same lines as Mary here.  I don't know anything about wedding insurance, so I'm not one to be giving advice on this...but I really don't understand how this works.  I wouldn't think that a sister/MOH is considered essential to the marriage.  As much as she is essential to you that she is there, it really only takes the 3 Mary mentioned for the wedding to take place.  Again, I'm not trying to be mean or rude here either.  And I wish the best for your sister....and your whole family!  Lots of T&P coming your way!

That's exactly what I'm worried about... the definition of essential.  I agree that she probably doesn't qualify, and knowing how insurance agencies work, they're not going to bend just for me.  I'm also not going to have the energy to deal with claims when/if (God forbid) I would need to, so it might just not be worth it.  I'm still going to look into whether homeowner's insurance might cover it, but other than that I think I'm out of luck.

Thanks for your input, it's a sensitive subject so thanks for being so kind.

I looked into it briefly because we are having a beach wedding during the hurricane season.  We decided not to do it b/c of all the little things hidden in the policy.  A perfect example is that a hurricane might hit the coast, but unless the is a mandatory evacuation and state of emergency called, the insurance won't cover it.  Or it would have to be a direct hit meaning if the hurricane eye was even 5 miles north or south of us, it wouldn't be covered.  I didn't feel like dealing with that.  So we opted to go without.

So if you do decide to get some, I would make sure you understand all the fine print.
