Getting in Shape

now there's motivation for ya

I've been trying to watch what I eat, get to the gym semi regularly, and have dropped about 12 pounds since January 1st. But got my motivation to really throw myself into it when I went to a well known bridal gown chain store for a browsing consultation, just to get an idea of what I liked/didn't like. All the sizes available for what I liked were in single digits, and I know the rule about gowns running smaller than normal dress sizes. There's no way I could get myself into one of them. Luckily, I'm not officially starting my dress shopping till the Fall (just wanted some ideas, get a rough idea of costs for the budget, and see what the gowns looked like when they weren't on an eensy weensy model), so I can do this!!

Has anyone else gone to a bridal shop and had a similar reaction?

I didn't have that experience. The stores I visited had size 8 or 10 samples but could order sizes up to the 20s. Are you saying the in store samples only came in single digits or that even if you ordered it you could only get single digit sizes? Congrats on your great progress in losing weight.
  • I'm guessing she meant the first - that the sample dresses were all single digits.

I actually didn't run into this at all (every store I went into had sample dresses up to size 18 at least) and ended up buying my dress from a store that specifically carried sample dresses in sizes ranging from 12-24. I didn't want to be someone who was trying to change myself for a single day/dress...If it's the motivation you need to get healthy though, good on you!

  • Not a problem for a me. All the stores I went to had sample primarily in 8 or 10. A few had the random 6 thrown in and they tried to sausage me into a 4 at one point. I'm not even sure why they even bothered to order a sample that small since most women aren't that tiny.

Good luck staying motivated to dress shop. That was one of my big motivations for a while too.

  • To clarify, yes, the samples available were only in single digits, something I am no where near being back into, but the dresses could be ordered in larger sizes. But, I at least got some ideas of what I really liked, and ideas of what I really didn't like (I've watched waaay too much of Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta not to go in for the formal dress shopping without some serious idea of what I prefer. Side note: that show and the bridesmaids edition make me want to elope, hahaha). And now, everytime I look at a piece of cake or think of something tasty (ie, not healthy) I can just picture those dresses!

That's annoying. I encountered that issue with my bridesmaids. Out of the two that were able to come with me the day after a major storm, both didn't even nearly fit in the sample BM dresses. They had to just hold it in front of them, and I tried on some for them. I think they should have one sample in an 8 or 10, but then also one sample in one of their larger sizes. They have those clamps that they could use to accommodate anyone under an 8 or right in the middle of an 8 and the largest size. I've heard that David's Bridal carries all sizes though so that's an option.

<div>This is awesome! I had a similar reaction when I went dress shopping in August 2012. However, I'm pretty busty and the chances of me getting in single digits is next to nil. I'm in the process of dropping weight now and training for a 1/2 marathon. I've lost 3 lbs in the past week (since 2/25) with the goal of 25 total (if more that would be awesome!). </div><div>
</div><div>I would suggest doing the weight loss and getting healthy for you. The dress is great motivation though and will help with the lifestyle change.</div>

  • Unfortunately I did have some of this experience as well.  The stores I went to carried a variety of sizes, some that were too big and needed clips, and some dresses I wanted to try on but could only hold it in front of me or hang it on my body via the straps.  It was very depressing.  I ended up finding a dress that I really do like, but I think partly because of all of this, I do have an increased level of dress anxiety in that I keep wondering 'what if I could have had that one on my body, would I have loved it more?'.  I made sure to take pics of the dress I did buy, so that when this hits I can look at them and remind myself of what pieces of my dress I really loved and that those other ones probably wouldn't have measured up anyway.  Don't base your weight loss on the dress samples, it's not worth it!  They aren't designed for the average person, they're designed to be put on stick figures that little kids draw.
