Videographer? Hiring or Family Friend?

I had someone ask me this weekend if I was having a videographer for my wedding and I never really thought about it until she said something! Has anyone looked into hiring an actual videographer and if so, what is an average price? Most weddings I have been to recently have had family friends/members tape the ceremony and not hired someonen specifically for the day. Not sure if this is the direction I should go...I am in the GB area.

I looked into it, but it costs anywhere from $300-$1000plus depending on what you want.  I'm not looking for that super professional look, but I do want my day commemorated with video too.  My teenage cousins have a video camera (it's their family's) that they've grown up using, so I trust them to get what I need.  Plus they're doing it for free (but I'll of course get them an awesome gift).

Precious Moments is right in your city. I have shot at the same wedding as Gary, the owner. He was great. You may want to consider getting a pro so that you catch all the audio and so they don't stand in front of the photographers. Pros work with other vendors (usually).

Here is a list of several videographers in Wisconsin:
    One Fine Day
    Creative Look Studios
    Memory Lane Video
    EllaBella Productions
    Aerodef Productions
    Treehouse Media
    Wisconsin Video
    Lucky 13 Productions
    Langley Videography
    Fink Studios
    JC Designs
    Our Wedding Day Forever
    David Kasdan Videography

These range from $500 - $3000. I'm in the same boat and can't decide if a professional videographer is worth the money. It seems excessive to me to pay $1000 for a 3-4 minute video montage to music. I really just want to make sure the ceremony, speeches and dances are on tape. I may go the route of using a trusted friend and then edit the video myself.

My DH is a video producer/director (he does not do weddings).  We did not use a videographer.  My folks have a very nice consumer-grade camera and we taped the ceremony.  My 12 year old nephew had fun with the camera during the dinner and reception and got some fun footage.  We are happy with the video and the cost (free!).

I did hire a videographer - ClearView Productions LLC.  He was in Greenfield when I met him, but has since moved to Oshkosh.  I am big on preserving memories after the day, so video was something I wanted.  People kept telling me the thing they would change about their wedding was not taping it.  I'm paying about $1,400 (which is pricy.)  But he is good (went to college for video, has done LOTS of videos even for the US speed skating team, etc.)  My package has him from 12:30 (when we get to church) until 10:00.  His video of the ceremony is all edited so coughs, etc will be cut out.  My fiance will be wearing a mic so you can hear the vows (people said with other videos they can't hear vows because camera mic is too far away.)  He'll be at the reception and will turn all the video into 2 musical highlight clips when its all done.  He is GREAT to work with.  I'm glad that I hired a pro video person so I know the video will be done great.

I had a friend video tape the Ceremony and regret it.  You can see us....from a distance.  You can't hear us at all.  Which was the whole reason I thought it would be nice to have the video.  We did our own vows and I really wish I could hear the moment my husband started to choke up or actually see our expressions.  My advise is to set your priorities in your wedding and then hire the best person you can afford in that field.  Especially if memory preservation is at the top of your list.  I will never get to share that moment with my kids or relive it with my husband.  At the time $1000.00 seemed too much but now I would have payed triple that to have what I will never get back.

I am using 1017 who is out of GB. I want to preserve the day to either look at the entire ceremony, or just the higlights. We are also doing a same day edit.

I am also thinking about going with 1017. I definitely am including a videographer in my wedding because when my mother got married she had my dads brother record everything and during the reception he only taped his side of the family. There were also some pretty special moments that were not recorded, and my parents regret not having a professional.
