NWR: Career

So FI and I both went to school for Criminal Justice him wanting to be a Police Officer and I wanted to do Dispatcher for the Police. Well I have been waiting till after the wedding to submit my application as I didn't want to be in the middle of things while I got married plus the added stress.

Well Saturday at my shower FI's aunt came up to me and was like you know I just retired about a year ago from the police department as a dispatcher. (I knew but never really thought about it) She told me that anything I needed her to do she would help me with. That she could write letters of recommendations for me and get me in touch with the correct people. She also said she could help me with training and all that once I got hired on.

I was super happy and shocked by this! It was so nice of her and yet such a huge deal to me since FI and I want me to have my job and get insurance with it before we have a baby and I want a baby ASAP. I told her that after the wedding and honeymoon we needed to get together and talk so that she can tell me all about how things work.

It was such a great gesture I just wanted to share with you ladies!

  • Connections can get you everywhere. That's awesome. And what a nice lady!
  • You might ask her sooner rather than later what the hiring process is like in your area.  It's pretty difficult to get on as a dispatcher in my area, because it's combined PD and Sheriff.  It's about a 1-2 month hiring process (I started the process and decided I had no interest in working overnights, so I withdrew).  I had to submit my application, take a test, take a more difficult test, and then actually have an interview.  After the interview, you have to take a polygraph, drug test, etc.  My local agency did not move quickly with this at all; I don't know if it's typically a slow process or what the deal was!  Just something to keep in mind!

I have all the info for the process in this area It is quite easy here depending on the dapartment. Good thing is they are always hiring and they move pretty quickly with the whole thing. Once you are accepted it is about a month to go through everything. I already have my test done so I can basically skip that step. Also ours are not combined it is all done seperately the only thing combined is the training since it is all the same equipment. The hiring process is left completely to that department though.
  • Glad to hear!  It really is all about who you know most of the time...hope she can help you find something.
