Hotel blocks

I hadn't on doing a hotel block but after talking to a few ppl they might be interested in getting one.  How did you decide how many rooms to book?  I don't want to under block but I hate to keep more than I would need.  If they don't get book I'm not responsible but I wouldn't want to hold 50 and only 10 get used.  I have three out of state but two probably wont come and the one that will, would stay with my aunt.  The rest of my guest are local.    They want to know how I want them divided 1 king or 2 queens.  They would be for a couple unless someone wanted to share.  I wouldn't care either way for me but is that a big issue about having a queen instead of a king?  Did you have that option and how did you figure how many of each.

I only plan on doing one hotel for  1 not sure how many ppl will get a room, 2 we can only get the shuttle for free if we get so many rooms booked and we also get a free room, 3 the price is really good and I doubt anything else in the are will beat it.

I'm still looking into a few other but well see what they can offer.

Thanks

I kind of went through my guest list, counted the OOT folks, and used that as my number of rooms.  We haven't sent out invites yet, so I can't say how accurate that number is.  We didn't get a choice on king vs. queen, so I can't help you there.  To me, it wouldn't be a big deal at all what size bed I had, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Most hotels release the rooms about 3 weeks before the date, which is plenty of time for the hotel to book those rooms IMO, so I wouldn't worry too much about over booking by a little bit.  I wouldn't go crazy, but I think you're safe getting one for every out of town guest at least.  Some might stay with family in the area, but you never know.

We picked our hotel primarily because of the shuttle.  To me, that's a REALLY nice thing to have, as it allows your guests to relax and enjoy the open bar as much as they want and no one takes a risk getting home at the end of the night.  Even those who don't drink probably appreciate not having to worry about how to find there way around a strange area at night.  We were also able to negotiate with our hotel an even lower rate than they initially offered.  So if you're worried the price is still too high, give that a try!

I booked 20, but I am only expecting about 10 or 12 to get booked.  I'm guessing the hotel won't let you block off an extravagant amount anyway...  You can keep an eye on your hotel block and if all the rooms book, you can add more.  I am doing a hotel block through the Hilton and there is a website where I can log in and check the reservations under that block.

Lastly, depending on the time of the wedding, you may want to consider holding a few for the night before.  I have 5 for the night before -- just in case any out of towners need them.

I am guessing the hotel won't let you block off so many that it will affect their business, so don't feel like you'll be blocking off the whole hotel and only getting 3 rooms booked.

Do the hotel shuttles run pretty late? I'm having the same predicament as AutumnBride. Most of my guests say they'll stay with family but I'd like to have that as an option to them and the shuttle is nice if I can find a hotel that has one!
