Outdoor Wedding in December

What are your thoughts on the weather for an outdoor ceremony and reception?  The average for December is between 40F-61F.  We are all coming from up North so our blood is a little thicker.

Am I crazy to consider outdoor?  Or should I price some outdoor heaters?

My friends wedding was in December and we second lined from the ceremony to the reception and people were sweating!!  We didn't need coats and I wore a sleeveless dress.  Her husband's family is from Boston and they were comfortable.  That was 2 years ago.

I would keep the outdoor time to a minimum in december. For example-  do an outdoor ceremony but indoor reception. I think an outdoor second line would be perfeclty fine since peoplea are moving around, but it can get shockingly cold in NOLA in december and has even snowed a couple of times. Unless guests were bundled in coats and hats they wouldnt be comfortable for longer than a half hour.

That being said, I have also experieced wonderful 70+ degree days in december, but that is not the norm and I wouldnt plan on that.

I agree with a pp about not having the entire shabang outdoors.

Have you looked into City Park? They have an outdoor ceremony venue that is directly next to an indoor reception venue. A friend of mine got married there a few years ago in December, and guests were able to come and go freely between indoors and outdoors. It was chilly, definitely not something I'd want to deal with for the entire length of a reception. Then again, you Northerners might be a little tougher than me when it comes to the cold. :D

If it were me, I wouldn't want to inconvenience my guests with an outdoor winter reception. We're notorious for our unpredictable winter weather. The year it snowed for Christmas, I was walking around in shorts not a week before.

I am getting married in December, but doing the ceremony and reception indoors. We are doing a second line through the quarter, but we have a backup plan for rain.  The weather is just too unpredictable. Although I think the chances are good for comfortable temps and good weather, last year in December there was torrential rain and flooding over a two week period. A lot of street flooding.  December was also much colder than usual. I know the St. Louis Hotel has an open courtyard that can be covered if there is bad weather, and they probably have heat lamps.

The weather is WAY too wacky in december to predict! If you're going to do it outdoors, I would definitely arrange for heater rentals. My understanding is that they aren't too expensive.

Thanks, everyone.  At the moment it looks like we might do an outdoor ceremony (with and indoor backup) and then an indoor reception.
