4 year old boy dies saving girl in pool

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/10/13217164-hero-boy-4-dies-after-saving-3-year-old-girl-in-pool?lite

This is so sad and nothing to debate, but I still felt compelled to share it.

A 3 year old girl was drowning in a pool and a 4 year old boy jumped in to save her.  He went under while tryin to hold her up, and once he got too tired, he went to the bottom.  He was in a coma and unable to breathe on his own, so he was on lief support all week.  They're pulling him off life support.

What an amazing kid.

I'm however confused as to how there were no adults around.  But the story wasn't very detailed, so I'm sure there's probably an explanation.

Oh my gosh.  I can't imagine that situation.  There has been a ton of drownings lately around here.  In fact, our neighbor's 2 year old grand daughter drowned after wandering to the neighbors at 8pm.  It's so sad and constantly hearing the sobbing is just terrible.  I can't imagine what they are going through.  In both cases I don't understand where the adults were.  Why are children that young wandering around unsupervised?  FSIL has a pool but gave her kids a very stern warning about them.  It was so stern her eldest was afraid to go swimming for awhile.

At least around here I think more people are going to be fined or held accountable for the safety of their pools (i.e. putting up ladders, putting fencing around all pools,etc.).

Adults were present at the pool during the incident, including an off-duty nurse who helped rescue the children, according to the Dallas Morning News. It wasn’t clear where the adults were when the incident happened.

This kind of makes me angry at the "adults".
I thought it was common knowledge that you cant turn away from a child in the water, ever. Not even a second or shiz like this can happen.
It looks like there is one of those shallow play areas for kids. Maybe she was left there and wandered into the big pool.
    Sad.

  • OMG! This is such a sad story! That child as little as he was is a hero. Maybe pathetic to say, but honestly, I wonder sometimes if an adult would have the same instinct.
I agree about the anger at the adults. NO MATTER WHAT, a child should NEVER be left unattended or unwatched while near water no matter how shallow it may be.
Personally imo (as mean as it sounds) the parents should face some sort of charge.
Yes the loss of the child in itself is a HUGE thing, but it never would have happened in the first place if either of the parents or child minders (whoever was there with the children) were paying attention none of this would have happend!!

  • I almost drowned at a water park (got sucked under the current at the top of a tube ride). My father heard me screaming from all the way at the bottom of the ride at a picnic table. There was a life guard at the top, and my brother was actually the one to save me by throwing the tube above my head so I could grab it.

My point is, I'm so incredibly amazed that no adult heard the three year old struggling. When someone is drowning, they're usually yelling. And that 4 year old had to have been holding that girl for a long time before getting exhausted. This is terrible this has happened. And it shouldn't have.

  • Such a brave little boy, but a really sad story. I'd LOVE to have a pool, but if we did and we had kids, that pool would be fenced off and locked if there wasn't an adult there specifically to supervise.

Even as adults, when we go swimming at DH's parents lake house, we go in pairs, or at least one person is on shore, because you never know when something could happen.

You dont have to have the pool itself fenced off, but if you have a pool your yard must be fenced off.

</div><div>When I was a lifeguard in HS, in training they told us that the people drowning were usually too panicked to scream or make noise. I still hate being around pools or water areas where there aren't lifeguards watching and the parents are letting the kids do what they want, aka diving into 4 feet of water. Last time I ended up leaving the pool early because the little fuckers were making me nervous and I didn't think it was my place to yell at them :)

  • Also- and I feel like kind of d!ick for saying this, but I am a little skeptical to believe that a 4 year old had the thought process of "I will save this child from drowning!  My own life be damned!"

Its really sad that he died, but Im thinking he probably tried to grab her and fell in, and wasnt a great swimmer himself (I know 4 year olds, they are not good without at least swimmies) and drowned.

  • Yeah supposedly drowning people don't look or act as you might imagine, I suggest anyone who is around water a lot or has kids google "what a drowning person looks like" because they apparently don't scream or flail at all! Scary.
