Need help deciding between 2

Hey guys, I am a June 2011 bride, and I need a little advice... FI and I have never been anywhere outside the US, and we need help picking a honeymoon destination.  My parents have a Disney Vacation Club, which can be used at RCI locations, and they very generously offered us to use the points for our honeymoon.  We've narrowed it down to 2 places... P. Cana (Sorry, TK won't let me write the whole location for some reason) and Puerto Rico.  The links are below:

P. Cana- http://tinyurl.com/23y9x64

Puerto Rico- http://tinyurl.com/2374a8n

We really have no experience in going anywhere like this and we don't know what to look for.  The one main difference we've seen is that at the P. Cana location, you must do all inclusive, which is $120/day per person.  Also, it's cheaper to fly into Puerto Rico.  One final difference is that I think I'd really like snorkeling and they only have that listed on the P. Cana website.

We did look at tripadvisor for both locations, and P Cana has 1,105 reviews, which obviously means there will be a lot of positives and negatives, but overall 73% of people would recommend it to a friend. Puerto Rico has 920 reviews and 58% would recommend it to a friend.

Any help would be very, very appreciated!!  Narrowing it down to these two was hard enough for me, haha.

  • I think it depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.  There is not much outside the resorts in P. Cana to explore.  If you are content with laying on the beach, hanging at the resort and taking a few excursions then you would be happy with P. Cana

Puerto Rico would be my choice only because you really get to experience the flavor and culture of the island.  There is a lot to do and see.  Beautiful beaches, old cities, etc.  If you are into getting a better look at the culture and doing more outside the resort then PR is your place.

Both the resorts are beautiful though. Have fun!

  • I have stayed at the Gran Melia 3 times and have nothing but good things to say about it.  I like that you do not have to get the all inclusive because there are some really good places to eat in puerto rico. I have never been to DR but my friends stayed at that resort and they hated the food.

Don't have much to say about the resort, but I think you'll like Puerto Rico.  San Juan is only 30 minutes away from the resort, and it's such a site to see.  Old San Juan have old churches, beautiful colonial, pastel-colored homes lined up on cobbled hilly streets; and the entire OSJ is walkable from tip to tip.  There are two old forts on two tips; El Morro being my favorite.  I will be there again for half a day for my Carribean Cruise HM, and I can't wait.  If you go, Yunque - - a Tropical Rainforest worth a hike, is a must-see, and I've also done zip-lining on the Camuy Caves area.   I heard Rincon and Ponce are great surfing spots, and Vieques island is known for their snorkling.  Back in San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde are two resort areas; so they are worth a visit, especially since they have casinos on almost every resort hotels in the area.  Puerto Rico have "coki" - - frogs that chirp like crickets at night, which is adorable to hear.
  • I am a little late on this subject, but I thought I would chime in!  We are also getting a week with RCI from my grandparents and are having a hard time deciding.  We are getting married April 2nd and most everything nice is booked.  So my advice 1st of all is book immediately.  2nd I've done a ton of research, sounds like you have too and am voting for one of those 2 islands too.  Sol Melia in PC was booked so we're looking at the the Hard Rock Hotel now.  Good luck!!!

  • i've been to both-pr 2x.
the reason that PCana is AI is because there's nothing else around as far as dinner etc.. goes. dont plan on doing a lot. sure there's snorkeling in PC but there is in PR as well. some great snorkeling.
do yourselves a favor. go to the library. get some travel books on each place and read them.

  • I've vacationed in Puerto Rico. We stayed at the Gran Melia -- gorgeous! And in Old San Juan at El Convento -- super cool hotel!
  • Thank you for all the advice ladies!
