is this too much to pay for uplighting?

hi all!

i got a quote of $2K for uplighting for our Aug 12 wedding.  Admitedly, i am totally at fault for not doing the research ahead of time, but is this a normal price?

on the flip side, is it even worth it for uplighting? we are getting married at Il Villaggio and i happen to think the venue is gorgeous, but i feel like uplighting couldnt hurt.  I know it wont make or break the wedding.

any and all help is totally appreciated. thanks!!!

Re: is this too much to pay for uplighting?

  • Are you requesting uplighting from your DJ or the venue?
I'm getting married at Seasons in April and their uplighting package is $1500, which includes uplighting the entire room (walls, chandeliers, etc...) plus two large screens for slideshows, etc...

My DJ wanted to charge me a lot more for this and he even said that I was better of going with the venues lighing package.

Does your DJ offer a lighting package?  Maybe find out what they would charge.  Ours would only have been a few hundred extra for uplighting but I didn't want it anyway.  I think $2K is a lot for some lights.

I think it's something that looks nice but very few people will actually notice.  Maybe poll Il Villagio brides and see what they did?

I loved our uplighting - our room had high ceilings and it made it feel "warmer".  The venue charged $850 and our DJ charged $500 so we went with him... this was for 28-30 lights all around the perimeter of the room (no screens or monograms).  It's really your personal preference - I liked it but think it's a "nice to have".

  • We booked uplighting through our DJ. I'm not sure how much just the uplighting is but our ENTIRE package is $2300 (DJ & emcee for 6 hours & full room uplighting), just to give you an idea.

    thank you all!

so the venue recommended a few places, but the quote of $2k is coming from the company that works with our band.
  • TRy JB Lighting..... they did our whole room, plus gobbo, stayed thru the wedding and changed the color scheme as needed throughout the night for $1500- it was totally worth it in my opinion and transformed the room
  • We got ours through our DJ. Not sure the exact amount but it was about $750

  • Our whole DJ package is 1170 for cocktail hour music, 4 hrs reception music, uplighting, 2 tv's and a gobo...so yes. I think $2k for just uplighting is a lot.

i feel like im missing something - 2 of you mentioned a gobo - whats a gobo?
  • It's a metal disc with your names and date etched in- that is displayed through a light on the dancefloor or a wall.

    stk - thanks!!
  • Yes, I feel it is.  Our hall, South Gate Manor, offered it for around $800 & the DJ offered it for around $500 - so we went with our DJ.  SGM holds up to 400 ppl - the room is a large rectangle.
  • Try out partiesbyme.com They're right in nutley and can probably give you a great deal.

    Good luck!!
