Getting your ring appraised

I have heard of people getting their engagement ring appraised. Would you ever do this? Do you know anybody who has? I do not want to do that because I think it's kind of slimy. I trust him, I trust that he's spending what he can and wants to spend on it. It seems so un-trustworthy! But some people do do this! There was a radio show about it where the host asked women to call in about appraising their rings and so many called in, I could hardly believe it. And they had crazy stories, too! Who knew?

I've read that appraising the ring is helpful for insurance purposes. I know plenty of folks who put their rings on their home insurance policies, in case of theft.

That said, I'm not sure that an appraiser would know what to do with my ring. It's not exactly a typical faceted gemstone; it's a rough green tourmaline.

That makes sense, but what I meant was, these women are appraising them to know what their Fiances spent.

I know. Sorry I wasn't clearer; I meant that appraising for insurance is the only reason I'd bother having is appraised, lol.

I was in the store when we picked out his and mine e-rings.  We know how much was spent.  He suprised me with a 1st anniversary ring - I'm not interested to have it appraised.  I know where he got it, and I trust jewelry from there :)

    Enough said!

Wow women will do that to see how much their significant other spent? People are straight up crazy sometimes.

I have an appraisal that came with the ring that I used for insurance purposes. But like KP, I was there when he bought the ring, so I know how much was spent.

It's really not about how much it's worth though. What matters is that it's from FI and a promise to spend forever together...people are nuts!

I do need to get it appraised for insurance purposes also, I know around about how much the ring cost him so I am not interested at all in finding that out. I am very lucky to have the ring and I couldnt have asked for more from FI, saying that my ring is with the jeweler (to get a matching band made)its been a month, I wear a replacement gold diamond ring mom got me...GOD I miss my ring so badly :(

Since I chose the ring I wanted, I had already researched price and everything, but even if I didn't pick my ring, I would only get it apraised for insurance purposes.  But I think FI would end up telling me anyway since we rarely keep anything from each other.  Some people have issues and lets leave it at that.

Nicky - you will be reunited with your ring and FI soon!!!

I just remembered another reason one might get a ring appraised - to make sure you didn't spend a ton of money on a ring that was worth nothing. You can come across some awfully shady deals in the jewelry business, after all.
