Registry question

So we are registering in June (around the 1 year mark) and we are registering at Williams Sonoma, Target, and Bed Bath and Beyond. We REAAAALLLY want the purple le creuset (not all but a good bit of it) and BBB only has part of it. The other carrier is Sur la Table but it's not near us or anyone else that is going to be attending the wedding. My MOH who recently got married suggested that I post on my website the first 3 that we are extensively registering at and go ahead and register at sur la table and just spread around to family and friends that we really want the le creuset. What do y'all think? Any suggestions??

Re: Registry question

  • Well, it's kind of bad etiquette to be like, "PShinthinthint we want this thing," BUT we did a similar thing... kind of.  We registered for our china and everyday dishes at this little boutique in Waco, where basically only my ILs and their friends could get anything (unless you called in).  My mom found our everyday at a Belk, and when she went to buy some stuff, she learned she could get a 15% discount if we had the stuff on a registry, so she just made a registry for us.  We didn't make that registry public, but a couple people found it anyway (you can go on weddingchannel.com and find any online registry a couple has), so we ended up doubled-up on some gifts, but that was the only problem (and not a big one, since returns were easy).

I assume you'd ONLY register for the Le Creuset you want at Sur La Table?  Are you sure Williams Sonoma doesn't carry it?  They have a pretty big Le Creuset selection.

Also, I highly advise against Target registries.  If I were you I'd just do W-S and BBB.

  • I checked W-S's website and they don't have the purple (cassis, I think they list it as) that we want and Sur la Table were the only ones that seemed to have the full selection. While BBB has a few things le creuset that we wanted, it didn't have all of them. Yes, we would JUST register for the le creuset at sur la table. I was planning on spreading it to my mom who could let ppl know at her discretion. Would that be tacky? And what's the scoop on Target?? I def don't want to make a poor decision for my registry..

  • In addition to having just a hell of a time completing the registry, stuff disappeared. More importantly, stuff for which we did not register, namely baby stuff, showed up.

I don't think it's tacky at all to have your mom spread the word to people that ask. I'm pretty sure in the days before the internet and weddingchannel searches, that's how people found out where the couple was registered -- asking the bride's mom.

I had just one item on an Amazon registry. But nobody found that registry (or maybe just nobody wanted to buy us the roomba. Darnit!)

And Target's registry is just really glitchy. I heard a couple different brides on here saying that random stuff they didn't register for showed up in their listing or stuff disappeared from their registry.

I also think they have a stricter return policy than most stores. Not worth it, in my opinion. We had a great experience with BBB.
  • I think the issue with Target, versus other home stores, is that their cashiers may not be fully trained on how to do a registry, and they are a big box store. Home goods is not their main thing, so registries are a small part of their business.
  • Actually, returning things on the registry was the easiest part about Target. We got an air mattress and opened it about six months later, only to discover it had a hole in it. By that time, the receipt was long gone. All I had to do was print the registry and they exchanged it. But yeah, I had heard bad things about registering at Target and ignored it, and then it was a huge pain.

</div><div>Typically, this is not the case with Target.  Target has a really strict return policy on the number of returns you can do, what time frame they can be done it, etc.  They will only do 2 returns without a receipt and/or the original form of payment in your hand twice per year.  To me, doing a registry at Target could potentially open you up to having to do far more than 2 returns without a receipt and/or the original form of payment (since you didn't purchase it).  My brother has been a DM for BBB for years and years and say they hear complaints about Target registeries all the time.  He encouraged us not to register there because he knew it could potentially be a nightmare for us.  We ended up registering at BBB and Pottery Barn.</div><div>

  • Hm.  Must have just been my lucky day, I guess.  Also, I suppose it helps that I was exchanging, not returning.

Bottom line: Target registry is more stress than it's worth.

  • Good to know. Thanks everyone for the advice! FI and I will just be registering at WS and BBB with the le creuset at sur la table, to be passed along by mother only.
