Hair and Make-up (vent)

I have been searching for a salon to accomodate my wedding party to do our hair and make-up, some of them have already been booked, and others that can accomodate us they are way over priced (IMO).  So I called the beauty school today and they told me that it would only be $20 for the updos and $7 for the make up.  I think this is a great idea, I have used the schools in the past with great results, but one of my bridesmaids thinks that it could be disasterous.  I don't think so.  I am trying to keep the costs down for them since they are mostly mothers and daughters, I would also have to pay for my hair and my FI's daughter as well.  Someone please tell me that this decision is not crazy and that thinking about thier budgets as well as mine is the right thing to do.  UGH I just want this wedding to be over!!!

Actually, someone on the knot somewhere yesterday posted that tehy were going to a beauty school too. And it had me thinking, why not? I looked into it and there are actually like 3 pretty close to my venue. I dont think im going to book it because I would want a trail and im not sure how it would work if you do a trail with a student and then the day of the wedding you probably just get someone that is there you know?
The only other thing that I would be worried about is if it looked really bad lol. Maybe you can get it done early and if it looks great then thats wonderful! If not maybe you can just go to a salon somewhere after and have it done? Idno that sounds like a pita.
Sorry this is absolutly no help! lol
  • We are having this same problem. We are getting our nails done by the beauty school the day before the wedding. One of my bridesmaids thinks this is a bad idea, so she is getting hers done on her own, elsewhere.  If you are okay with the idea, and everyone else is okay with it, then I would just explain to her that it is much cheaper than going through the big salon. If she would like to go elsewhere to get hers done, she is more than welcome to.

I personally don't think it is a bad idea, but our bridal school has 2 instructors that sit in on bridal parties. And they step in and correct the students if things aren't perfect. Since they know that this is for a very important day. Maybe ask the salon what the protocol is for bridal parties, and how many instructors will be assisting the students.
  • I think as a cost saving idea, it should work. As long as the school you are going to has time to do everyone together. My ONLY concern would be the timeline, I know i've gone to get my hair colored at a beauty school once, and it took twice as long as it did when I had it done at the salon. Just be sure when you are planning your day of you are allowing for extra time if your updo's take longer than normal.

  • Thanks girls this makes me feel so much better.  I have been second guessing my decision.  They school is going to have 2 instructors on hand to be overseeing the hair and the make-up and I have alloted 4 hours for both hair and make up this should be more than enough time.  Since they told me that they will have 5 students working on hair and 3 doing make-up.  We should be ok on time.  Money has become a big concern to us in the last month up to the wedding and this just seems like the best solution where we can still relax and be pampered without spending a fortune.

  • I think that sounds fine.  The schools do have supervisors to step in if a mistake is made.  If you are having a trial run, make sure that you would be able to work with the same stylist-in-training.

I've gone to a school of beauty several times and I've always been pleased with the results.  My only complaint is that, as a "newbie", they tend to be slower! A simple dye-job took about 3 hours. I would allow lots of extra time!  Time for them being slow and time for the supervisor to correct any mess-ups.

  • Thank you for reminding me that this is an option! I just checked around me and there's one that I can go to for a $20 updo and a $5 manicure. (My hairstyle is straight out of a Real Simple summer issue and I've never had a manicure so pretty sure I'll go super-duper easy there too!) I think it's a great budget saver and I'm planning on getting a trial in a few weeks so I can get a sense of how long it will take and whether I'll like it or not- plus, if I do like the results,  I can request that same student to do it for the wedding day- what's not to like??

  • I'm a bit late to chime in, but my entire wedding party is having their hair done in the Beauty School salon for $25 each.  When I booked the entire party, they gave me a 1.5 hour time frame (I didn't think to ask about how many people, I just assumed it was one per girl).  They specifically gave me the name of the girl that would do my hair so I could schedule a trial with her (if you pay the $25 for the trial, your day of is free!)

I also briefly worried about the "quality" from a student, but the fact that they were already able to give me her name means she has at least 2 months experience, and their program is 12 or 18 months (I forget), so the likelihood of having someone BRAND new is low.  Just as in any other salon, if you don't like what they're doing, speak up!  If they personally cannot do what you are asking, it is the salon's responsibility to have someone to assist.

I get my hair cut at the beauty school and have never been disappointed.  I have experienced them seeking out someone to ask a question on how to do a certain cut, so I'm confident they will get the job done!  As for your bridesmaid who is "poo-pooing" the idea, I'd tell her she can join the bridal party & you and have fun, or go elsewhere by herself.

  • The BM that is hesatant at the idea of going to the beauty school went to a beauty school but that was 20+ years ago and she wasn't happy with her progress there.  I spoke with the instructors and they assured me that everything was going to be fine.  That they knew this was a very special day for me and would be overseeing the entire process.  I am going to schedule a trial in the next week or so and then make sure that the student that does my trial is there on my wedding day (even if I have to slip her an extra $20... LOL)  I know that it's just my nerves as the wedding day grows closer and I am over reacting.  Thanks again to everyone for helping calm me down about my decisions.
