Engagement ring help.

Hey everyone! Well, it's about that time I am starting to look for rings. Where are the best places to look? I'm from Plano so really anywhere in Dallas would be fine. I have a budget of around 6,0008,000. Is that too little? Too much? Just right? If you amazing people out there could help, my girlfriend and future wife could potentially be very happy!!
Thank you!!

Re: Engagement ring help.

  • My husband ordered my center stone from Diamond Source of Virginia (I think -- I will correct if I'm wrong) and got the setting in Waco at Curtis Cox Jewelers.

I heard once that the budget for an engagement ring should be around 2.5 paychecks.  I think the budget you've set is just fine.  Do you have any idea what kind of ring your girlfriend wants?  What her ring size is?

My husband used Gillespie Jewelers in Addison.  Like the PP, he had the center stone (family heirloom) and had the setting custom made.  He said if he had not had the stone, he would have most likely gotten the stone from Blue Nile and had a ring custom made.

Congratulations and hope she says yes!  :)
  • We used Mariloff in the World Trade Center.  This also another excellent jeweler located there as well (the name escapes me right now).  We were so, so happy with the service and quality we received there.  We got a MUCH better deal that someone else we knew that went to Zales and bought a very similar ring.

  • How exciting!  My FI proposed with a family heirloom ring, and we had the center stone set in a custom-designed setting.  We also went to Gillespie Jewelers....if you want to get her a custom ring, Gillespie is very, very talented.

I know Jared is also very popular, and I've noticed they have pretty rings at Helzberg.  I think your budget is a good, healthy budget.

  • I thought he said 6 million at first. Wow. Ok apparently my MOH went around with my now hubby to pick out my ring. They went to Northpark mall and just went to every jeweler there until they found the right one.

Unless your girlfriend is really into brand names, I'd recommend avoiding them. We got my setting at Robbins Bros, just their house brand. There was another ring there that was very similar but with less diamonds in the setting and it was over $1000 more expensive just because of the name of the designer.
HOWEVER, some women love brand names so she might prefer a tacori or whatever - to each their own.
Fiancé let me pick the setting. He picked the rock from bluenile.com
Careful buying the diamond from certain stores (Tiffany's, Cartier) because they will be extremely marked up!
