October 2012 Weddings

What did you use as a guide / how are you planning?

I feel like I am flying by the seat of my pants and as much as I often thrive under pressure...I don't exactly have experience in the world of wedding planning. I believe it was semay23 that posted she was engaged in May and started planning June 1 for her wedding in October. I have a similar timeframe, and as organized as I thought I was ... I thought it would behoove me to ask how each of you has planned towards the big day.

I listed out what I thought we needed to purchase, or otherwise make arrangements for. I budgeted those tasks according to my paychecks and his paychecks. When I stumbled across TK, I didn't feel like I made any gross miscalculations (except thinking I wouldn't 'need' a gift table and had never heard of a card box before). How many of you are using a wedding planner? Are there other checklists or resources you have found helpful along the way?

  • I actually found the knot's checklist to be pretty good. I also have the wedding planning for dummies book.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • I think The Knot's checklist has been a good guide.

The first thing I did after getting engaged was research and book my vendors.  I wanted to make sure I got the best in the business.

Then FI and I decided what type of wedding we wanted.  We decided on classic, rustic, (somewhat) Fall.  These are where the details came in: attire, decor, flowers, kind of food, music, etc.  From there, I've just taken on one task at a time.

I work a part-time second job at a wedding venue, so I already had a good idea of timelines, decor, and the do's and don't's of wedding planning.  Because of this experience, I don't need a full blown wedding coordinator.  I have hired a coordinator for the day of my wedding to keep up with my vendors, keep track of my timeline, and make sure things run smoothly overall.

  • I used the Knot and I bought a planning book at the begining that I haven't touched a whole lot. Once we decided on date, venue and colors, I started with the basics and then started to figure out the smaller details.

  • I have a degree in integrated marketing communication and have had event planning internships, but honestly nothing prepares you for planning your own wedding.

TK checklist has helped.  I'm getting married in Ohio (where we are both from) but we live in PA so whenever I can get home for a few days at a time I make it a point to get as much done as possible.

One thing that is hard about using a site like TK is that wedding etiquette is not universal.  In my hometown, no one has ever heard of a cocktail hour and everyone does the dollar dance.  people on the boards cannot seem to understand that these things are perfectly okay in some communities and jump down your throat about how "rude" it is.

  • I used the knot a lot, and also just did a lot of my own research. I created a wedding binder to keep me organized as well.

  • Theknot.com check list here too. and all the wonderful ladies on this forum!
  • I have a bunch of books, but have use the Knot more then them.  Once we got the major vendors booked, I've used this forum more than anything to gauge how far behind I am!

  • I have been mostly relying on the TK checklist. I do feel like the timelines are a bit over-eager (mailing invitations at 3 months when I read over and over in the etiquette blogs that 6-8 weeks is more typical). I'm constantly running behind based on their list, but I know from my vendors that I am doing OK or even early. The list is very thorough, which has been very helpful.
