Ring shopping!

Hi all-hope everyone had a great holiday. I don't post here too often but I like to read all the posts. I got a Knot magazine in my stocking so I have been browsing alot on here again recently.

Anyway-BF and I went to the jewelry store and looked at rings the other day (his idea!) I tried a few styles on, picked out what kind I like, etc etc....It was kind of fabulous! Made me so excited that we are going to, eventually, get engaged and spend our lives together!!

I don't want to know which one he's going to get-I want it to be a surprise-so we just looked at a few with the lady who works there and she made a "file" for us. My BF has a stone from his great grandma that he wants to get placed in the setting, and I have no idea what it looks like except that it's square (princess cut?). I also have no idea when he is going to propose- but now he knows what kind of ring I like so he can take that information and do what he wants with it! I definitely don't want to like design the ring myself or know anything about what it looks like or when he's proposing ahead of time--but it doesn't hurt to give him some direction!

Does anyone have experience with this, or do you want to be completely surprised when you get engaged?

My FI and I bought the setting together (my grandmother gave him her diamond). It was about 5 months after we bought the settings that he proposed. It was a long five months but I was surprised with the actual proposal! Congrats :)

There are a few ladies here that have designed rings with their FIs. Just because they had a hand in designing the ring doesn't mean they knew when the proposal was coming. I think it's up to you and BF how much input you have in to it.

Jparli I bet that was a long 5 months! I cant get the image of the ring on my finger out of my head haha

I picked out my ring with my H, so I knew exactly what I was getting (I didn't know when he bought it though), but it definitely did not detract from the proposal (which I also didn't know when or where it would be).

However, just because you are looking at rings, doesn't mean that a proposal is going to be soon.  The first time H and I looked at rings was about 9 months before we got engaged.  So be sure to just enjoy this time in your relationship because the anticipation of it, while it can suck sometimes, is actually really nice.

I gave my FI my grandmother's ring to take the diamonds out of in November. He took the ring to a jeweler in May and proposed in July. It was a LONG eight months, and I didn't always handle it the best. So my advice would be to forget that you even went to look at rings and just enjoy this time with your boyfriend.

Once you get engaged, it's a whirlwind of tough decisions, budgets, guest lists, etc. While it IS exciting, you shouldn't wish away these last few months of (relatively) stress-free life :)

Welcome to NEY... so, how do you feel about Harry Potter (I'm indifferent)? Cheese (love it!)? Wine (must have it)?

AH yes, definitely enjoying this phase of our relationship for sure. I appreciate that reminder. We are at a great spot at over 2 years of dating- very happy and have smoothed out alot of the dumb arguments that arise when getting used to each other.

I do want to just enjoy how happy we are now and yes definitely know a lot of new things come up when you get engaged. I'm not trying to plan the future but ideally I would like to not start planning a wedding for a couple/few months after we get engaged for that very reason of just enjoying getting engaged everything.

I have made a point to not bring up rings and stuff with him since we looked-and I def. don't EXPECT to get engaged like this weekend lol, it's just nice to know we are both serious about each other.

So, Harry Potter I am okay with, not like a super fan, I've seen a few of the movies........Cheese I'm obsessed with haha, any and all kind, and I don't drink so no wine! I need to update my profile...I promise I will get on that :)

I went ring shopping with my FI almost a year before he proposed, and let me tell you, it looks NOTHING like what I'd picked out at a jewelry store. The only thing that was the same was it was white gold and had colorless stones. You can see it in my sig. It took me awhile to get used to it, because it was very different from what I'd envisioned, but it was custom-made by his great-aunt, using an heirloom diamond, so I learned to love it.

Perhaps you should lurk for awhile... you might find a lot of support around here for the same type of thing.

My boyfriend is picking out the ring himself, he wants me to have nothing to do with it and I'm ok with that because of all the jewellery he's bought me so far, I've loved the style of every piece. So I trust him to get me something that's my style, if I didn't I definitely would give him some direction since I'll have to be wearing the ring he gets me for the rest of my life. So yeah it's all going to be a surprise for me.

    I *heart* you Nursery!!

BF and I looked at rings for a LOOONG, LOOONG time before buying one and we're still not engaged.  The first time we looked was when we were together about a year - just for fun.  Then we started looking a bit more seriously this fall and then purchased earlier in December through our family jeweler.  He wanted me to pick out exactly what I wanted and it was really fun to do that together.
The ring however, is still in a box, in a shiny bag, staring at me.  It could be months - or longer - before BF decides to propose.  No, I don't understand it and sometimes I don't deal with it well . . . but those times I just take Patience out for a ride!!

OK-sorry no one can tell that my username is obviously a joke-I would never refer to myself as one if I wasn't. In case you didn't read the first post I said I had been lurking and reading posts for awhile but I thought I was "allowed" to post now that we are talking about getting engaged......Apparently there are unwritten rules in here I just can't follow correctly....Jeez. Sorry for doing it wrong.

Actually the "rules" are written, in the sticky. And if you lurk you kind of know what responses to expect.

The advice PPs have provided is that sometimes it can take months (or longer) before that ring ends up on your finger, so it's really best to try thinking about other things to keep from driving yourself crazy!
