Sore Muscles

Tuesday I did Jillian Michaels 30 day shred.  I was sore yesterday so instead of doing the workout again I went for a walk.  I wanted to do the video today but the back of my legs are still really sore!  Did I do something wrong?  Any sugestions on how to prevent this?

Re: Sore Muscles

  • When I was doing 30DS, I was sore all of the time for the first 5 days. After that it started getting better as my muscles got used to the exercises. Then when I started level 2 the soreness kicked back in!

I don't think taking a day off in between is a bad thing, if that's what you want to do you'll still have the benefit of doing the exercise so really, you can't lose!

  • you're supposed to be sore. that means you had a good workout. you can make sure you stretch those muscles afterward as well as the next day. use bengay. take some aspirin. it's ok just keep going.
  • I find drinking some unsweetened coconut water and an aspirin after a super hard work out help prevent some muscle soreness. The fitter you get the easier it is to manage. When I first started my everything hurt so bad but now, I find its MUCH more manageable.

Also making sure you drink enough water can be a factor.

  • YOu are supposed to be sore! especially if you are not used to that intense of a workout.. i have been working out with an great program i go to 4 times a week called spartan bootcamp.... i have been going for 8  months and there are still days that i wake up sore in different spots because we do so many different excersized! Keep working thru.. My trainer does say that its important to have 2 days a week of rest

  • thanks ladies!
  • Soreness is mostly caused by lactic acid build-up.
If you have it (ie, if some of these ladies prevention techniques don't fully work for you), the quickest way to get rid of that soreness?
    Kick out that lactic acid.
    How?
Warming up those muscles.. ie working out ;)

Your body needs rest, but people tend to exaggerate just how much "rest" they really need.
Sore is a wonderful feeling.. It means your body is changing for the better
    Keep it up.
  • Yep, keep moving! :)  the less you move, the cooler your muscles, the tighter they feel, that's how it seems for me anyway :)  Drink lots of water, and don't underestimate the power of massage, nothing too hard or painful, just some gentle working of the sore muscles helps by leaps and bounds :)  My FI does fencing and because of work, he misses practices every so often, so when he goes back, he'd be sore for days if I didn't spend just a few minutes working on him the night of practice (before he really started to hurt). It's almost preventitive medicine in our house ;)

Tart Cherry Juice can  help with sore muscles. Also make sure you're hydrating and getting electrolytes but NOT from icky sugary sports drinks. Try bananas for potassium for example. And like the other ladies have said, definitely take a day off!

  • Do you need any equipment for the 30 Day Shred?  If so, what kind?
  • lulu4150 - I've found that stretching more afterwards has greatly reduced my soreness while doing 30DS. Jillian just doesn't have enough stretching during her cooldown. Also, consuming protein and water afterwards will help your muscles with recovery.

BMSawa- You need light hand weights, but you can use a couple cans as a substitute. If you have hard floors you will probably want a mat.
