I love my new toy...

Brian has some competition!

My camera came yesterday!  I'm absolutely in love, it's so easy to handle, decently easy to learn to use (even Manual mode- I didn't get this thing to keep it in Auto mode!), and just so much fun!

And just in time too- my mom and sister got a puppy on Tuesday, so I was able to go over and take pictures of Molly (their new cockapoo) and Mindi (our Morkie) with the new camera!

I have not been this excited about something in a long, long while.  Learning with Brian, having something to challenge myself with, being excited to get out of bed and actually do something (even with the pain; I have been pretty much bedridden for the past 2 years and getting out of bed is hard, even with the motivation- and this is the best motivation yet!), all the while documenting our memories and hopefully knowing the camera and shooting when kids come... There is just so many exciting aspects to this simple piece of technology.

Brian's pretty excited too.  Now we have to figure out what our next lens is going to be... I think it's going to be a Tamron 28-70mm, but it's a bit pricey, so it will either be a while or I have to really search to find a refurbed or gently used one.

I will add some photos of the first photoshoot and the newest member of our family, but I have to resize the photos first!

Sounds like photography will be a fun new hobby for you. I love pictures but I don't know much about cameras. Whats the deal with the different lenses?

I'm so happy for you! lol. You are too funny. I'm glad you have something happy to motivate you out of bed! I would be so confused or I would leave it somewhere... lol. My camera is always on auto.... hahaha on the rare occasions I actually remember to bring it with me!

Paprika, with a DSLR camera, you change the lenses out so you can get different types of shots.  Right now, we have the one it came with (called a "kit lens"), it's an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.  The f/3.5-5.6 has to do with aperture, or the f-stop.  It deals with how much light is let into the camera.  It's one of the reasons that photographers can get good shots without using a flash.  Depending on what you want to do- archeticture, portraits, landscapes, closeups, etc- defines what type of lens you should use.

Part of the thing with DSLR is you can change TONS of settings.  It's very, very different from shooting with a Point and Shoot.  The saying goes that if you are shooting in Auto mode on a DSLR, you are better off getting a really nice point and shoot, since the whole thing about DSLR is putting it into Manual mode and learning how to take pictures.

Problem is, lenses can get expensive.  There are two types: prime and zoom.  Prime is also called fixed, because you can't zoom with it.  Many photogs will at least have one prime in their bag, a 50 mm.  Then there is zoom, which is what the kit lens we have is.  The next one I have my heart set on is the 28-75mm f/2.8.

The 50mm lens runs around $100, give or take some.  The 28-75mm runs around $500.

Here's a great site that explains it all in better terms:
