Are you supposed to "hire" a seamstress to alter the BM dresses and wedding dresses? My wedding is 10/20/12 and i just got the call today that my BM dresses came in. When I was a BM at one of my friends weddings she had a lady there like 2 nights before her big day and she measured us all and just did the alterations at her house. Is that normal? What are other options? TIA :)

    I had a seamstress do my dress. The BMs were responsible for finding someone to do theirs if they wanted it altered.

    BMs are responsible for altering their own dresses.

    It doesn't take long for a dress to be altered, and most seamstresses won't even look at a dress until your date is close. Obviously, people are trying to lose weight, someone could be pregnant ... there are a host of reasons not to alter a dress until the wedding is really close.

    That said, don't wait to book a seamstress either. Good ones book up really fast, and you don't want to be stuck without having someone to do it.

    And yes, bridesmaids are typically responsible for their own alterations.

    (I used to work for a formal wear designer, and did more than my share of alterations!)

    It depends on if you go through the place you got your dress or not. Chains like DB or AA can take 3 or 4 weeks to alter. 
    The seamstress my BMs and I used had the bm dresses done within 3 weeks, but we pretty much just dropped them off and said we would come back for them the day before the wedding.

    I'm a 10/20 bride too! I just had my second fitting yesterday with the seamstress that my DOC recommended. 

    My BMs have all picked up their dresses now and they are all responsible for finding their own seamstresses as most of them live OOT.
