Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, Chupacabra, etc

I spent a good portion of my day yesterday wasting myself on the couch watching a show on Animal Planet (I think it was Animal Planet) called "Finding Bigfoot."  That show is hysterical.  Basically it's this team of three guys and a woman who go around the US looking for Bigfoot.  They usually get a tip on a recent sighting and then have town hall meetings where other people give their own stories of their encounters.  The three men pretty much typically believe every Bigfoot story they hear, while the woman is almost always passing off most of the stories as hoaxes.  I was dying watching it.

Anyway are there any legends or creatures that you are interested in?  Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, chupacabra, Mothman, I dunno, anything?  Aliens?  Anything completely off the wall that you think you believe in?  And why?

Cew sent me the mothman book and it still freaks me out. That's the only one I'm willing to entertain just cause it was "different". I don't believe in most "creatures" though, just ghosties and the like.

I don't think we have any big stories here other than local ghost stories. ETA: Oh I live kind of close to the mothman bridge

My family has a vacation place in Wisconsin, and we're usually up there in the summer for the Hodag Country Festival. We always take a least one walk at night just incase we might come across one. Here's the explanation for what a hodag is

In 1893 newspapers reported the discovery of a Hodag in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It had "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end". The reports were instigated by well-known Wisconsin timber cruiser and prankster Eugene Shepard, who rounded up a group of local people to capture the animal.[1] The group reported that they needed to use dynamite to kill the beast.[2]

A photograph of the remains of the charred beast was released to the media. It was "the fiercest, strangest, most frightening monster ever to set razor sharp claws on the earth. It became extinct after its main food source, all white bulldogs, became scarce in the area."

  • H and I love shows like that.  Finding Bigfoot is hysterical because of how quick they are to believe everything, UFO Hunters was very similar because they were just as quick to believe every story.  My favorite 'monster/paranormal' show though is Destination Truth, the host is pretty funny and they actually take a more scientific and objective view (of course, they still rarely turn up with anything, but it's much more interesting to watch, mostly for the crew themselves).

I'm not sold on any of the cryptozoological animals, but I'm more inclined to consider paranormal & UFO events because they aren't as easy to prove one way or the other.  I feel like if any of the animals existed, we'd have something by now that proves it, so the lack of any evidence makes it a lot less believable.  Whereas, paranormal & UFO wouldn't necessarily have any physical evidence, so the lack of it doesn't quite make me as skeptical to it's existence overall.  Of course, I'm not sold on those ideas either, but I'm just more willing to look at it objectively rather than skeptically.  Regardless though, I do like all those types of shows because I find them interesting.

I always wondered where Rhinelander got their mascot. That makes sense.

Idk what I believe in.  I think it's one of those things where I dno't believe in bigfoot/loch-ness simply becuase there is only ONE of them.. and they have been around forever.  I highly doubt that would be the case.  If they truly existed, I feel like they would be better documented.

Now, as for aliens, I do believe in those.  I highly believe there is life on other planets out there.

The Finding Bigfoot people estimate there are anywhere between 2k and 6k Bigfoots in North America, so there isn't only "one" Bigfoot.  Well, lol, assuming there actually is a Bigfoot.

I think it would be cool if stuff like that actually existed but the fact that people can't ever get credible footage or evidence (like you know, a fucking body?) doesn't really help their cause.

All the pictures of the Loch Ness monster look like a damn elephant trunk sticking out of the water.

The montauk monster! I totally forgot, I love that little guy. Mostly cause I found a painting on etsy of it and it was one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. Good ol montauk monster.
  • I guess I've never really given any of it much thought.  I will say this about aliens though - if they exist, they're a smart bunch.  I met Travis Walton (the guy who claims to have been abducted for 5 days - the movie Fire In The Sky was based on his story) and that dude was a prick.  Aliens probably couldn't handle him for more than 5 days.

If there's that many, then they gotta die sometime. Where are the dead bodies?

  • The only ones that freak me out and I somewhat believe in are ghosts and UFOs. The others seem pretty unbelievable to me, but that's just me. I've seen some pretty freaky shiit in the past, so that's why I'm more apt to believe in those things.

I will say this, though, that The Blair Witch Project freaked me the hell out. It was just so twisted and was one of the first of its kind when it came out, so maybe that's why it blew my mind so much. Plus, I was like 14 when it came out.

Oh, and I've never heard of Mothman; is that like The Candyman? Bloody Mary? *off to wikipedia*
