Not Engaged Yet

Cheesy things I love.

I'm not normally the romantic type. I do like a good romantic comedy, but honestly if any of that played out in real life, I think I would probably feel more uncomfortable than sentimental.  But I do like some corny things occasionally.

For example.
I like calling BF my partner.  I think it's a better title than BF, because BF sounds so temporary and sometimes kind of juvenile.  The way I see it is, we've already started our life together even thought the means to get married aren't here yet, and "partner" illustrates that better in my head.

Also, an acquaintance at my school just got engaged. Along with the ring, her FI gave her a leather journal and he has a matching one.  They're going to write letters to each other everyday and then exchange them on their wedding day.  I think that is rather precious.

    I am learning the ways of the cheese from BF-I've never been sentimental, and it sometimes makes me uncomfortable.  Since meeting him, I have actually bought cards that didn't have a smart @$$ comment on them, and that is huge for me.

    I like the journal idea, especially if they were writers/poets.  That would be an interesting read on the honeymoon!

    My favorite proposal story is from a guy my mom knew-he took his GF to see Phantom of the Opera when it was still in Canada, and proposed during "All I Ask of You."  It's sweet, and I love Andrew Lloyd Webber, so I love that idea :-).

    My FI isn't very expressive, so he gets me sappy cards. I love them. :) For Valentine's Day, he wrote on the card so that it read "To my beloved FUTURE wife." Too cute. :)

    I like the "partner" idea. I went with BF to the ER the other night (nothing serious, just needed a Dr visit before he left) and the Dr. asked who I was and he replied My GF. It doesn't bother me but it got me thinking, GF could mean they've been together for a month, week, etc..and that's probably what the Dr assumed and was probably wondering "why did his GF come in the ER with him, why didn't she wait in the waiting room?" I'm not some girl he just started dating, I know his shizz like a wife/fiance/his momma would. I don't remember what my point was..I think I just wanted to complain. For some reason my eyes are blurry today and I forgot my glasses at home..poo.

    That's exactly why I prefer partner, ekathleen.  I hate that BF/GF is so vague I guess.   But you will get a lot of strange looks because people automatically seem to associate it with same sex couples.

    That journal thing is TOO CUTE! Love it!

    BF isn't really sappy (I'm not too sappy either) but I love when he gets me flowers or has them sent 'cause he makes the cards so ridicilous/funny!  One from last month said "Like sand through the hour glass...you are the love of my life".  It was cute but I really cracked up b/c the soap opera reference.  He's sent me others that were funny too, like "I choo choo choose you!" (Simpsons!).  It's corny but that's just how we are lol

    Love the idea of the jounals, so precious. I think its amazing when a partner does something just because. One of the sweetest things i've heard of was a couple who would hide notes everywhere to the other to find through out time. *Sigh* Too cute

    Narwhal, BF told me awhile back that he didn't like the term BF because it didnt sound serious enough, but I was like, "what else can I call you?"  When the census came and we filled it out we were trying to fill in the relationship section and he picked "unmarried partner" and then proceded to thank the goverment for defining our relationship...totally cracked me up.  I now jokingly call him my UP...but yeah it does lend it's self to same sex relationships.

    haha ! Love it!

    I literally call my BF "boyfriend" and all my friends do too.  There are so many Dan's in our lives that it's easier.  The other night he was like "What are you going to call me when we get married?"  I thought about it and decided that I may start calling him Dan by then...or maybe I'll just switch to "husband" lol

    I'm with your friend. My friends did this to me when I was gone. Only it was with sticky notes all over my bedroom. All over the walls, dresser, bed, closet, in the dresser, in the bed. You name it. It was a little funny. I took all of them and plastered them all over one of their cars.

    BF wrote me a note the other day and put it in a chewable pepto box in his glove compartment. He said "Honey, I have a stomach ache, could you get me some pepto?"  So I went into the glove compartment and got him some, completely ignoring the paper inside. I handed it to him and he just looked at me. He said "No... my stomach doesn't  really hurt. I just wanted you to find that note and you ignored it."

    We had a pretty good laugh after that.

    BF and I occasionally leave notes around the house, it's pretty rare though.

    Maybe I'm just that unromantic but the writing letters in matching journals thing sounds like homework to me. Undecided Sure it sounds great but when things get stressed those letters might get kind of nasty. And when if he flakes out and only writes two and she's filled the entire book up?

    @Button: hahaha...i'm totally with you!!

    Even though we talk everyday, I do write letters to BF pretty regularly, because I know his inner softy loves them. I myself love tiny things like a raunchy mid-day text, or when we're together, a slice of cheescake left for me in the fridge - since he loves it even more than I do and will ordinarily savagely devour it, I know it's taken him plenty effort to be sweet and save me some when I visit.
  • edited December 2011

    Paige totally the same thing. Good thing you're not marrying her, so unappreciative. That being said, if I tried to hide a note or BF did we'd probably think it was trash or something before we read it and toss it. Ah romance. Although he has saved a few notes I gave him in HS.

    This would happen with my and BF, total FAIL.

    In HS they used to give out carnations/chocolates for sweetest day and valentines day. My friend and I used to make up horrible cheesy saying and send them to the most random people at school. A few years later when BF and I were dating I sent him a flower that read "You're prettier than this here flower" -which was our signature note

    Update::
    Earlier I told BF I didn't want to say BF on some calls I needed to make for him and I didn't think I was taken seriously by saying boyfriend. He told me to say husband. I'd say husband if I didn't have to personally go to this place and they'll see our last names are different, so I countered with "lover" (in a real creepy,sexual voice) I made my calls (using "BF") and let him know. He replies with "ok Love you Lover" and I about died laughing.

    So from now on I will be referring to my SO as lover...ok just kidding.

    Newbie here - I do cringe a little at intros as GF/BF. It sounds off putting and childish when you live together and have been together for a number of years - just about 7 - but eh whatever, I have a sense of humor about it anymore. I was pleasantly surprised though when filling out the census that we had the 'unmarried partner' option!

    BF will sometimes buy me 'untraditional' cards for holidays and occasions, which crack me up. I have gotten birthday cards in Spanish, birthday cards with Disney Princesses or super heros on them, and my Easter card this year was super corny on purpose. It's sweet because the corny, joke cards better portray his personality than the sappy cliche ones - so I certainly find some romance in receiving them - oddly.
