Flowers

Hi, I just started looking at bouquets and flowers in such.  I was shocked at the prices.  I know I want white roses with red also through them.  We are doing a black, red and white wedding.

I saw Jay+Marissa you were doing some neat DIY stuff.  Love it!

I was also wondering what some of you other gals are doing to save money?  I know nothing about silk flowers and if they are cheezy or what the trend is.

Can anyone help with suggestions?  I

I used Market Street in Colleyville.  I've used them a lot for school stuff and they are fantastic and Deanna is a great person to work with.  Really, though, most florists will work with you if you give them your guidelines and the price you are willing to pay.  Since I love flowers so much, I didn't consider doing silk.  Mandasue though did silk so maybe she'll chime in with her experience there.

I got my centerpiece hydrangeas from Central Market and I was able to get 10centerpieces for about $120.  DIY seems overwhelming, and it can be, but you can do it, and it's probably prettier sometimes than paying a florist.

Hi- I had the same sticekr shock as you when I was pricing out flowers - I ended up with 5 quotes and went with higher end and wish I had used the least expensive market street- if you know wha tyou want and it's roses, I would think market street or even tom thumb or kroger could knock it out for you. I know someone who used kroger for rose bouquets and they looked great. I think DIY would be stressful. We DIY's a few things outside the venue with flowers and ti was more than enough extra work and stress on the wedding day, but obviously it can be done and lots of ladies have done it with success.

My sister was in NY for a trade show (she has a salon and store in NJ) and said she saw some really beautiful silk and you could not tell they weren't real. I am not sure where you get the good stuff though but if you are diy-ing I would think that would be a lot easier.

Good luck- the flowers were the hardest part for me!

Depending on your location, there was a place in Mansfield (not sure of your location) that seemed very resonable. It was something market  or 7th. I'll have to find their card, but it was a DIY place where you could buy all the flowers and they even had a class for $45 to show you  how to make all of the stuff.

For centerpieces, use more candles, petals, etc. and less flowers.  Personally I would rather see a beautiful candle arrangement than a silk flower one but that's JMO.  Centerpieces can definitely be a budget buster but if you keep it simple and work with a good florist, it can be done.  I agree that any florist can work with the budget you give them.

If you are considering DIY fresh flowers, The Flower Market on W. 7th street near downtown Ft. Worth might still give classes in wedding flowers.  I took one for about $40 (includes the flowers for a bout, corsage, and small hand tied bouquet).

You can also order in bulk from them.  Our church has a flower guild, and we can order flowers from them at a discount for special occasions.  If you are having a church wedding, ask if they have a flower guild you can order flowers through. (any money you pay the church, like for flowers, is considered a tax deductible donation).

Otherwise, we usually get our flowers by the bunch/package from Sam's club for a very reasonable price.  You can also order arrangements made up in advance, buy in bulk, or on line.  They also have "wedding collections" that include bouquets, bouts, corsages, centerpieces.

I agree with pp... I prefer flower alternatives to silk flowers.  I just don't like silks.  Candles can be beautiful.  I've also seen lanterns, fruit, and feathers.  I told my florist that I wanted to stay under "X" amount, and she helped come up with suggestions to make that happen.

Also, we are reusing some of the ceremony flowers at the reception- bridesmaid bouquets for the cake table (or head table if you're having one), alter arrangements for the gift table or guest book area.  My florist was key in helping me stay in budget, yet still accomplish the look I wanted.  Logistically, DIY would be a nightmare for me (separate venues with very limited set-up time before the reception), so using my florist's suggestions and expertise was key for me.  GL!

Well we haven't booked just yet, but we told a great florist our (pretty low!) budget and she was totally able to work with us.  I put this off for as long as I could because I was dreading it so much.

We are using hurricane candle on mirror tiles with votives for our centerpieces so we don't have that expense at all.   We are just gonna sprinkle rose petals around them and do some pretty tablecloth overlays.

We are basically just doing bouquets, bouts, corsages, and 2 large altar arrangements.  The plan is to move the altar arrangements to the reception room for decor and the BM bouquets will be on the cake table, and my bouquet will be the centerpiece on our sweetheart table.

My friend used A Man & A Woman Floral Design (www.mandwfloraldeiisng.net) It think thats the correct site. She got roses for all her wedding party and paid around $600....other floral shops were trying to charge her over $1000!  She used candles for centerpeices so she saved money on flowers that way and had silk flowers for the flower girls to throw.
