Credit Card Rewards Recommendations, Please!

Can anyone recommend a credit card company with a good rewards program? Or say which ones they wouldn't recommend? We're planning on getting a new credit card and paying for the wedding with it in order to accrue points and use them for the honeymoon.

Re: Credit Card Rewards Recommendations, Please!

  • I think you should check where you want to go and which airlines fly there. I have Delta which is not great (lots of hidden fees) and American Airlines- which is great. I have heard Jet Blue has a good rewards program too.
  • I've heard in general that American Express has some of the best rewards programs.

We have a Chase Freedom and at the time of booking our HM they were offering bonus rewards back, so we're getting $200 back, but I think you're looking for something different.  Sorry
  • Be sure to weigh the cost of the card too - many times the annual fee counteracts the benefits you'd have of using the card. Check to see which ones have affiliations with airlines you like and want to use. Or, check out ones with affliations with hotels.

  • I would suggest American Express overall; however, sometimes the best deals you can get are through the mail.  If you have good/excellent credit, you will receive offers all the time for ~50,000 miles (just received a chase card with this offer) for signing up.  Always read the fine print - there may be stipulations for taking these bonuses in the form of annual fees.  Usually you have to spend XX amount within the quarter.

Long story short, keep your eyes open for deals.  I was able to finance an entire trip to Hawaii for my FI and I simply because AE sent me an offer for 75k miles.  I had to spend $1,000 in 3 months, but that was pretty easy.
  • I have one credit card with Continental and my business credit card with United.  I got  my ticket to hawaii for free by cashing in my miles on my continental card, and will either get the rental car free with my United miles or use my united miles to get nights free while we stay in hawaii.  Both cards are through chase.  United miles has more options on what I can use the miles for like rental cars or hotel nights.

  • I use Discover. They have some pretty good rewards. I would however avoid paying for your wedding with your credit card unless you plan on paying it off very quickly. Discover usually offers a one year interest free deal for new members.
  • American Expres Starwoods Preferred Guest is great for hotels.

American Airlines credit card is good for airfare.
