Hi everyone,
My name is Emily. I've been engaged to Joe since 2/13 and I am planning our wedding for 4/21/12. Joe and I have known each other since middle school band, he played drums and I played clarinet. We hung out in overlapping circles in high school and became friends our junior and senior years. I had a huge crush, but he was "cool" and I thought I was the complete opposite so I never told him. I went away to school and we both got into serious long term relationships and lost touch.
Fast-forward five years, I started grad school in molecular biology at U of M and my long-term relationship fizzles. I hear through a friend that Joe is also recently single, so I send him a pretty straight-forward email: Hey, I hear you're single. I'm single too so if you want to hang out sometime it might be fun. We re-kindled our friendship first over several months then started dating "officially" in August 2006.
Joe worked for Chrysler but when the economy tanked he decided to pursue his dream of working in law enforcement and applied for a position as a Border Patrol Agent. So, since October 2008 he's been out in San Diego with a career going in the BP while I finish up grad school here.
Joe has been telling me since we started dating that he wanted to marry me someday, so as my graduation has approached this last year I was getting really impatient. Every time I went out there or he came in for a visit I would get my hopes up that he would ask, but finally when I visited last month he did. We had dinner plans in downtown San Diego but before we went to dinner we went to watch the sunset and enjoy the views from Mt. Soledad just like we did the first time I went out there. Once it cleared out and it was just us looking out at the city he asked and I of course said yes and cried.
So, I am about a month away from graduating, a month after that I will probably be moving out to San Diego to start a Post Doc. I want to get as many things in place for the wedding before then as possible. First thing is reception venue, which comes to my first question. I am seriously considering the Italian American Banquet Center in Livonia but there are only a handful of reviews online (all positive though). Is anyone familiar with the place? I have checked the stickies (which have been super helpful) but I haven't seen it.
Finally, I fell in love with a dress online. Its in the Allure Women's collection but after calling around to all stores that sell allure in a 100 mile radius, no one seems to have it. Can you girls recommend a bridal shop that has a wide range of sample sizes to help out a plus size bride? I realize that most gowns can be made from 0-30, but I actually want to be able to try on the dress I buy. I picked up a card at a bridal show from a place called Bombshell Bridal so I will go out there, but if any of you ladies with experience have a suggestion I'd love to hear it!
Thanks!!!

Re: Official introduction and a couple questions
Also, I cannot say enough amazing things about B Ella Bridal in Northville. Larry is amazing!! I'm not sure 100% sure about sizes but they seem to have a lot of sizes when I was looking around. I also tried on dresses at I Do Too Bridal in Plymouth but they don't take appointments so it can get crowded.
Congrats on your engagement!!
When is your defense? I am a PhD student at U of M too (Industrial Engineering), defending sometime in June or July!
Italian American is great, especially if you have a larger wedding (300+).
I can't reccomend from personal experience, but Adora Belle and Bombshell Bridal have gotten good reviews from other Detroit Knotties.
Good luck

[QUOTE]Welcome!! I'm sorry I don't have any answers to your questions but I'm sure someone will be able to help you out! I'm also getting my PhD at U of M in Neuroscience. But my lab just moved to University of Washington this past summer. So now I'm a Wolverine in Seattle...planning a wedding in Detroit (I won't be defending for another few years...I'm a 3rd year). :) You'll be amazed at how the long distance planning makes you super proactive so that you don't miss out on appointment dates and such when you head back home for a weekend. Happy Planning!
