cocktail hour

I am having trouble locking down a date due to the church and reception venue not coinciding.  Righ tnow, the date that the reception venue has available the church only has the noon tim e slot.  The venue is an outdoor reception and ideally would work from a 6/7 pm - 11/12 pm/am.  I am wondering what to do with guests in between the ceremony and the start of the reception.  It would be about 4 hours.  I was thinking about having an extended ocktail hour somewhere from say 3 - 5, then transporting guests to the reception venue for dinner/dancing.  Has anyone ever done anything like this?  Is this a bad idea?  I would push up the wedding reception but I really want it to be partially at night.  I haven't booked anything because I really want to have the details locked down before I do!!  Thanks in advance :)

I have been to serveral weddings, usually catholic ones, where the ceremony is early afternoon but the reception is in the evening. It's not ideal, but it's not terrible. I have never been to a wedding where you stayed all day like that, usually people can find things to keep themselves busy in between.

That's a long time for people to be at a wedding. You might get some guests leaving right after dinner instead of staying for dancing, just my guess. If you are set on doing this, I would make sure I had something to break up the time (not sure what though!)
