New Knottie!

Hey, everybody! I'm new. Got engaged in June, getting married June 1, 2013. I am finishing my last semester of school (going to school for journalism to write for a magazine), and I am 24 and a promotions model, meaning I do wine demos, and liquor and beer tastings at grocery stores, liquor stores, and bars/restaurants/clubs. My fiance is also 24 and is in his first year as a teacher. We've been together for more than 4 1/2 years and live together with our cat and dog.

We're having an outdoor wedding, on a budget, and trying to do as much DIY stuff as we can to save money. We're having a peacock-themed wedding (more focus on the colors in the peacock feather & maybe some peacock feathers, but not a whole mess of peacock crap). Probably mostly teal and turquois with some accents of the other peacock colors tool. We're hoping to do Thai food for our wedding, because we love Thai food so much (maybe honeymoon there too if it's not too expensive). We love wine a lot too, so trying to incorporate that some too (maybe use corks in escort cards and other recyling of wine bottles etc).

Some ideas I'm thinking about is maybe using renttherunway.com for bridesmaids dresses- this way they can wear gorgeous dresses but the rental cost will be cheaper than everyone having to buy a dress that they probably won't wear more than once. Anyone heard of anyone else using RTR for bridesmaids dresses? I was thinking about renting some nice dresses on there too for myself to wear for rehearsal dinner, bachelorette party, bridal shower, etc. Another idea I'm thinking about- maybe having the rehearsal dinner at a winery (since this says more about our personality than doing something like Macaroni Grill (his mom suggested)),

Still trying to get a lot of stuff figured out, but won't have as much time for wedding planning until I graduate in mid-Dec. Splitting costs between us, his family, and my family. Got my dress, venue, maybe caterer. Need to start looking at florists and bridesmaids dresses next I think.

Anyway, looking forward to being on here! :)

Re: New Knottie!

  • Hi! Welcome!
    Where are y'all getting married?
Another Knottie had her RD at Times Ten Cellar in Lakewood, which would be great for you guys as well.
Definitely stick around, as I got almost ALL of my vendor ideas from these boards. The girls are great! Oh, also, we have a daily thread. Tomorrow is Attention-Whore Thursday, so you can brag on yourself for something.
    Again, welcome and congrats!
  • Welcome to the board, and congrats on the checks you already have! Thai food would be an awesome dinner option. Do your families like it as well? That always seems to be a problem when FI and I go back to visit with my family -- we want Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, etc., and no one likes to try it!

I haven't heard of RTR, but then again I'm not having a wedding party. It sounds like a good idea though! The only thing I would be worried about is that renting a dress might end up being the same cost as buying one new or used (depending on what's picked).
  • Cwaggoner, we're getting married in Fort Worth. I looked up where Lakewood is from FW, and it's nearly 5 1/2 hrs away lol... unless I looked that up wrong. I was at Grapefest last weekend, and that's where I got the suggestion from La Buena Vida winery (in Grapevine) for doing the RD there. Just emailed them today to see what prices would be on that, but we'll probably want to look at a few in the area.

Chelsea, depending on the dress we'd go with, it would probably be a little cheaper to do RTR, but not much cheaper. The dress I was looking at on RTR is $75, but they had some cheaper ones too.

This is the one I like from David's Bridal for $99 I think

I'd do that dress probably with this belt in black- $39

Another obstable I'm facing right now is the catering. The Thai food would be delicious but wouldn't be everyone else's 1st choice, but I think it would be unique and really speak about us as a couple. I used to work there, and it's a small family-owned restaurant, so they said they'd do a discount, so it'd only be $8-9 per person for appetizers and entrees, buffet-style, but we'd have to pretty much figure everything out ourselves, get someone to pick it up from Denton and set up up (and probably re-heat it some, since it's a 45 minute drive from Denton to FW). Cheap, but kinda a hassle. So my FMIL thinks it would be better to just find a caterer who'd handle everything so we don't have to worry about it ourselves. She'd like to find a caterer who'd either do buffet-style, but at least deliver & get everything set up, or maybe just have everyone served, but I know the latter of the two would be a LOT more expensive. Anyone have any ideas on inexpensive caterers? If they could do Thai food, that'd be a plus.

    Thanks for the welcome! :)
  • OP - Lakewood is a part of Dallas near downtown (didn't know how familiar you were with the city), but yeah, that's still too far for a FW wedding.
I know you have your heart set on Thai (and girl, I love me some good Thai), but that sounds like a major hassle I would not want to mess with on my wedding day.
BBQ can be just as cheap, and that's what we did. We had caterers come in and set it up and then break it down to leave. Since it wasn't full service wait staff, though, we did save a lot of money.

Haha, no, Lakewood is a Dallas neighborhood.  There is a Times Ten Cellar in Ft. Worth, though, so you might check them out.  I am the one who had the RD at at X10, and it was fabulous.

I would actually suggest doing Thai for your RD, if it is so important to you.  That way you still get to include something that speaks to your personality, and you still get to do something a little easier for your reception.  Part of why we did our RD at X10 is that it was one of our very favorite places in Dallas.  We couldn't use it for our reception, but we still wanted to incorporate it somehow.

ETA: X10 (at least the Dallas location) does not have much in the way of food except for some apps and desserts, but they do have carry-out menus for all the nearby restaurants, and that includes a ton of Thai places at the Dallas location.  For events, they have a list of preferred caterers that you are not required to use, but you can get a discount on their wine if you use one of them.

Winechic had her wedding at La Buena Vida, but I would not recommend it for June because it is an ALL outdoor venue and you really need an indoor option in the summer.  However, you could definitely check her wedding out for some inspirations!

  • Hi and welcome!  My sister was a promotions model for years and she loved it.  She ended up traveling all over the US.   After, 9/11 everything dwindled but I know it has now picked back up.

I think you could get away with maybe having a Thai station or Thai appetizers as part of your wedding but not for the whole thing.  As a guest, if the only choice was Thai food, I would be very disappointed so you might want to keep that in mind.

I've heard of RTR but don't know of anyone who actually used it.  To me, it sounds like a hassle for not much savings, but that is JMO.
  • Welcome!!  I am getting married this weekend and it is a peaock feather theme w/ teal colors!  I will have a lot of stuff i will be selling once I get back from my HM so email me if you would like to see what I have before I put it on the boards to sell!!! GOOD LUCK w/ you wedding planning!  my email is kel50785@yahoo.com
  • Haha that's good that Lakewood isn't so far, and also nice that X10 has a FW location. And for La Buena Vida, we were just looking into them for the RD, not as a venue (all outdoors in June would be kinda mean to torture the guests like that). We're doing the Botanical Gardens in FW for the venue (already paid in full for ceremony & reception, with the exception of rental stuff). The good thing about them is that they're not too expensive, and they don't have too many rules and restrictions. One thing I'm really loving is that I'll be able to provide my own alcohol for the wedding (I have like 4 full cabinets of liquor that I got for free from work!), so that's gonna save us a lot of money. As for BBQ catering, it does sound like a tasty & inexpensive way to save money, but I'm a vegetarian, so I'm looking for something with more veg options (I don't want to be stuck just eating mashed potatoes and rolls lol).

And Kel, congrats and I hope you have a great time this weekend! I am definitely interested in the peacock stuff from your wedding! After everything's died down & you're back from your honeymoon, maybe email me pics and info for the stuff you'd be selling! My email is misssharonsue2@aol.com- Thanks!
  • We worked with Celebration catering for our RD and they are really, really good at just about everything.  They did make a vegetarian lasagna that was amazing (although their chicken lasagna is a hundred times better).

You'd be surprised what some caterers can whip up for not a lot of money.  Check the vendor list to find some suggestions!
