mini cakes as centerpieces

I wanna do mini(2-tier) cakes for our centerpieces at each table. Has anyone done this, and how did it go over....... Does anyone have any pictures?

I think AllAboutTheBenjamins did this, from what I remember she said it worked out well. She also might have a planning bio with pics, not sure.

    Oh, HAI!

I did indeed do mini cakes as part of our centerpieces.  We had small cakes, and then tall skinny vases with a silk floral arrangement next to it.  There are pics in my bio, in the Reception section.

Do you have a large guest list?  I think small, two tier cakes would be cute - but it kinda would depend on how many people you have.  We had 46 tables - so that was 46 cakes.  My baker told me she could do this no problem, but after she did it for us we heard from her that she'd never do it for a wedding of our size again (350+).  If you're going to have a TON of cakes, you might want to take care to not design them too elaborately.

Then again, my baker was a one woman show who bakes cakes from her basement :) She did an amazing job on our admittedly simple cakes.  Maybe something a little fancier might be easier for a more established bakery.

A girl on my local did it, it was really pretty (first time I had ever seen or heard of it) and she said it went over really well.  She did 3 different designs.  Here are some of hers:

I recently went to a wedding where they had a different flavored cake at every table, but they weren't mini cakes.  probably 8" round and squre layer cakes.  The baker also had the same reaction. "Wasn't a problem" beforehand.  Either wouldn't do it again, or would charge a lot more if she ever attempted it again.  But again, 27 three  layer, different flavored cakes.  Pretty on the tables though and the guests really enjoyed it.

At my wedding each guest got their own 4" x 4" x 4" cake.  When they received their RSVP in the mail for main dish, there was a second RSVP for what type of cake they wanted.  They had 5 options to pick from.  We had assigned seating, so the cakes were already on the table at the appropiate seat.  It was a huge hit.

    Flavor options:
    Chocolate cake with caramel filling
Chocolate cake with peanut butter filling
    Vanilla cake with strawberry filling
Vanilla cake with Oreo cookie filling
Banana cake with mango filling (#1 picked option)

I've seen this at bridal showers, which tend to be less formal, and it worked out nicely. There were nice cake knives and servers on each of the tables that went home with the winners of a bridal shower game. Each of the tables had a different flavored cake so some people got up and went to a different table to try another flavor. It was great for an intimate group of people. Hope this helps, its my first post.

We recently went to a wedding that did this, but had a 12" cake at every table and there was a TON of cake left over.

I also would not recommend doing plain white or marble cake because we felt left out with our marble cake when everyone around us had fabulous flavors.  :)

i'm not really any help, except to say that i think it's a really really neat idea!  i'm considering the use of food as a centerpeice as well... it just sounds like something guests could enjoy more than looking at flowers... but i've never seen it done!

Holly Cow - a 12" cake at each table.  That is crazy.  Accoring to the Wilton serving guide (industry standard) a 12" round will serve 56 people and a 12" square will serve 72 people.  I bet the bride bought that size because she thought it would look best at the table and didn't base it off how many people it will feed.
