Inexpensive but good wedding cake?

Hello everyone,

I've looked around old messages and I haven't seen much about cakes.  Does anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive cake that actually tastes good in the Metro-Detroit area?

Thanks,
-Stacie

  • I'm personally using Just Baked - when you get their cupcake tower, they will deliver it and set up the cupcakes and you get a free cake for the top to cut.

It comes out to I believe $2 per cupcake and you don't have to pay a cake cutting fee (obviously).

  • Mr. Cake in Ann Arbor!  He is delivering my cake to Livonia for a small fee.  $1.80/slice and it's delicious!

  • We're using Pasty Palace in Wixom. The vanilla is amazing!! I think a 3-tier was around $500???? It feeds 125 people. I think the cake is $3.50/slice.

  • We used Holiday Market in Royal Oak. For a 2 tier that served 100 (we had way more than 100 slices in that cake) I think it was around $180.

The cake was AMAZING!!! Yellow cake with passion fruit mousse inside. We tried 4 different flavor combinations at our tasting, and to be honest, each of us (us and my 2 kids) picked a different flavor, they were all so good. I let Kevin decide since he didn't have a lot of input (which was how he wanted it BTW).

Our DOC doesn't even like cake, and she raved about it.

If you are working on a budget, you can always get a single layer, and then get yellow or white cake with white frosting from Costco ($17 for a sheet cake that serves 48, with amazing vanilla mousse filling, other flavors). The sheet cake can be cut in the kitchen and served to the guests, much cheaper (35 cents a slice) than paying for a larger cake.
  • I'm using party cakes in Berkley, MI for my upcoming wedding. She has really great ways to save money for her brides on a budget.
  • I used Josef's in Grosse Pointe.  The cake was amazing!  It was right around $2.00 per person.  I got a 4 tier cake and 2 sheet cakes (enough for 300 people).  We received a lot of compliments about the cake...it was good for breakfast the next morning too.  :)  Definitely check them out!

  • I also used Josef's, but paid a bit more than Cori (I think mine was closer to $2.75/slice). I had a tiered cake and a sheet cake, enough to feed 200. We chose two different batters and also had two different fillings. The fillings are likely what added a bit of cost on for mine.

And the cake was super yummy!

  • I recommend checking out Hodell's Cake Shop in St. Clair Shores. I got a four tier cake that served about 100 and a double thick sheet cake that served about 100. The total, including delivery, came to right around $2/slice. It might have even been a little less. The design I chose was pretty simple, but they did a nice job, and the cake tasted good.

I would call them and see if they still offer 10% off the price of your cake if you place your order on one of their wedding cake tasting days. I think they take place every few months.

Great tasting cake and everything is included - all flavors and fillings.
  • I second Cakes by Stephanie.  Best tasting cake I tried - even beat out the ones that were $7 per slice.

SWEET AND SAVORY!!! It's in Oxford but they deliver just about anywhere. We were originally trying to book Michelle Bomarito (you may have seen her on Food Network on all those cake-offs) but because she was going to be in Italy for a competition, she reffered us to this little shop in the middle of nowhere.

I HATE cake 99% of the time but their cake was PERFECTION. You should at least go for a tasting, even if it's out of the price range you wanted to stick in, tasting it is worth the time even if you don't go with them.

I think we paid around $5-6 a slice BUT we went with one of their specialty flavors last minute, this deflated chocolate soufle with dark chocolate mouse filling, they are much lower if you just do a regular flavored cake.

Our original qoute: Lemon layers with strawberry marmalade & buttercream $3.95 x

  • I'm getting married in the Detroit/Dearborn area, but I have found that most bakeries will deliver.  Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!
