all-inclusive: cancun v. pc, dominican republic?

we are getting married in june and planning on spending 6-7 days at an all-inclusive in either mexico or the dominican republic. we identified the iberostar grand hotel parisio in cancun and the iberostar grand bavaro in pc. as places that have what we are looking for. they are within $30 of each other on apple vacations, so we are totally torn!

does anyone have any experience with either of these resorts/places? any advice?

thanks!

Re: all-inclusive: cancun v. pc, dominican republic?

  • have been to both places, neither resort. cancun has a TON more to do outside of the resort in every way-restaurants, shopping, day trips etc... so it really all depends on what you're looking for besides the resort.

  • I haven't been to either resort, but our HM decision came down to these exact two choices.  We ended up choosing IGB in DR but the only reason I can remember it winning out was because of the beaches in DR.  There doesn't seem to be much to do outside of the resort, as we are learning as our trip gets closer.  I will say that the rooms look "bigger" at IGP and I know for sure there is a lot to do in Cancun.  We have been second-guessing ourselves since we booked a year ago.

So yeah, ummmm, I guess I wasn't much help huh?

  • I've never been to the DR, but recently came back from Cancun.  The Iberostar was pretty close to our resort.  CAncun was great, I highly recommend it.  There was a lot to do in the area.  We took a trip to Aqua World one day and a trip to the Isle De Mujeres another day.  We were also going to go to the ruins, but decided it was a little too far and we didn't want to waste a whole day.
  • We actually got engaged on our trip to PC in the DR. We stayed at Catalonia Bavaro Royal (this is the adults only side). They also have a family side which is just called Catalonia Bavaro (that you can still have access to, but not vice-versa). It was a smaller resort (on our side anyway), but we absolutely loved it. Check it out on trip advisor (there are also good building/room recommendations there). The room was awesome (we got the one with the big soaking tub), the food was delicious, the people were super friendly, and everything was so laid back. No reservations required for restaurants = no plans required. :)

I haven't ever been to Cancun so I can't compare/contrast but the beaches in PC were beautiful. We did a snorkeling trip and deep sea fishing. The deep sea fishing was on a whole other side of the island and the water was a completely different shade of blue. Just breathtaking.

lol no!!! save mexico for an anniversary trip :) now you have another trip to look forward to and wont feel bad about your HM choice.

  • thanks everyone!

we are planning on just enjoying the resort. . . i am starting a new job two days after we get back from our honeymoon so we just want to relax!
  • Is there a difference in airfair that could sway your decision?

I was deciding between Cancun & DR but chose Cancun because we could go into town and had more options for excursions- which you mentioned isn't a factor for you. I also have read that Cancun is safer than the DR > although staying on the resort you will be perfectly safe.

Also I have done extensive searches for hotels in Cancun and hadn't heard of this one so I just looked into- just an FYI it's in playa Paraiso.

  • We are going to the DR and staying at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro for 7 nights, so I'm glad to hear someone enjoyed it. I have been to Cancun, though admitedly as a younger me, and enjoyed it very much. We have  2 kids (from my 1st marriage) and are planning to start TTC on our honeymoon so we are looking for a relaxing trip. that being said, we did book 2 excursions, Mud Buggy tour and zip lining, and are open to booking somthing else once we're there. Good Luck with your decision!
