My Mom is too modest and picky...

My Mom is having a really hard time finding a dress for my wedding.  She isn't the type to dress up - I think the last time she wore a gown was her own wedding. To make things worse, she's large up top and very modest. She doesn't want any clevage, shoulders, legs, or back showing, and she doesn't want anything "flashy".  She's tried on a ton of dresses, and they either didn't fit her top, or she felt uncomfortable in it.

Is anyone's Mom having the same issues or know of any good websites to find an affordable dress that will match her taste?

  • Have you checked David's Bridal? They have 834957 options. Just checking styles on their website, it seems like maybe these could be options?

  • What about a pantsuit?  There are some really lovely ones out there, so if she's not comfortable in dresses, she may prefer that route.  My FMIL is planning on wearing a pantsuit to our wedding.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Oh some of these are great!!! I'll send her the link and see what she thinks. Much more modest than anything form Nordstroms.
  • Modest and picky, that could describe me. I had a very hard time finding an outfit for my daughter's wedding last year. I finally found a tea-length skirt at Dillards and went ahead with the buy. I figured I could return it if I didn't find a suitable top. It took another month to find an lined organza jacket.

It is quite difficult to find a covered-up MOB/G dress, but don't give up. Your mom should keep trying in the Social Occasion departments of big stores or boutiques. If she finds either a top or a skirt/pants she should buy and look for the other half of the outfit.

She could have an outfit made for her by a seamstress. If she looks at dress and pantsuit patterns she might find something suitable.
  • Mori lee carries a line of modest dresses.
