how to lose 50 lbs?

My wedding is 5/4/13 so I have about a year to lose 50-60 pounds. It seems like nothing is working for me so I was just wondering if anyone had any pointers and ideas.

Thanks!

Re: how to lose 50 lbs?

  • You said that it seems like nothing is working for you... We can give yuo pointers if we know what "nothing" is. What have you been doing? And have you stuck to anything longer than just a month or two?
  • Well, I tried weight watchers for about 7 months and I lost 11 pounds but I felt like I was just wasting $50 a month. Right when I stopped going I gained it all back. I also tried Jillian Michaels 30 day shred video but I can't seem to stick to that either. I guess I just need a way to stay motivated.

</div><div>Well, hate to be nasty but it sounds like no matter what you do it wont work for you until you decide this is it. I am a WW follower, Ive lost a lot of weight with it and it completely changed my eating habits because I believed it in and I have not gained the weight back because I continue with the tips they gave me, is it easy???? HELL NO!!! its not, I love cake and chocolate, but now i eat it just once in a while, otherwise of course i would put all the weight back on. Now i am doing it again just to loose 6 pounds to look even better on the dress and because with the wedding planning i have been eating between meals and not exactly the healthiest of snacks, so I rather act now! not when i put all the weight back on. </div><div>I am sorry, but I do think that most methods work, (specially ww) and if none of them is working for you, then the method is not the problem, you need to put your head and ALL your wil power towards it. </div>

It is more than possible though.... GOOD LUCK!
  • I think different things work for different people...I think diet is even more important than exercise (though both important!) What does a typical day of eating consist of for you? Maybe you need to change the things you are eating and cut portions gradually? Ive learned how to eat healthy and portions are my biggest downfall. I refuse to cut out any one food group.  Instead of cutting carbs, I switch to healthy whole grain carbs and reduce them as much as I can.  As far as exercise, it helps to do something you like so you will actually stick to it.  Also, if you can work out with a buddy, it can help you stay motivated.  If you feel in your heart you have truly tried to commit to different things and nothing is working, make sure you get a full work up at the dr (maybe an endocrinologist) and make sure your thyroid is working properly and you have no hormonal disorder such as Polycystic ovarian syndrome--it is something I have that can make it difficult to lose weight for sure.  If you've had a work up, just take a good honest look at your diet and portions and make sure you are eating lean meats, lots of veggies, some fruits, and less/better carbs.  Make small goals for yourself instead of looking at "i have to lose 50 lbs by next year", say to yourself something like, I'll lose 5 lbs this month, or I'll swap my after dinner cookies for a greek yogurt with fresh fruit (or any healthy, lower cal swap)...just small goals and you;ll meet them before you know it.  Good luck!
  • I'm with palas. You also need to find an exercise regime you like. This is not about just a diet its about a life change. I understand that first hand because I've done it! After my daughter I had over 50 pounds to lose, and I had lived a very sedentary life up to that point. I lost the weight via south beach changing my eating habits and adopting an active life style.

I now do endurance sports. This keeps me lean, that and I restrict carbs in the off months sticking to mostly produce and lean protein. I also dont drink calories forinstance. I also stick with whole grains in moderation. I eat low fat, and a lot of produce, and lean meat.
In the summer I eat a lot of icecream to not completely disappear but as you're about to see I exercise enough that I really dont have a choice but to eat crap and stay healthy.

As for exercise I started out with walking and weight lifting. I got an itch to run a 5k and that turned into a monster of endurance racing. I now run all distances 5k-13.1 miles. I have medical restrictions from any race greater than 13.1 miles or training runs greater than 15. I've done distance cycling (60-100+ miles), and triathlon. This year I will run my first half ironman.

Despite these factors my weight like anyone's is going to flux. I accept every fall I'm going to put on about 3 pounds of winter fluff, and in the spring I'll cake on 3 more muscle before dropping all of it. I call this my fluffy and uncomfortable phase. Right now I've hit the phase of my full on training that I'm starting to drop weight again since my mileage is to the point of being race distances. I will soon be to an unhealthy body fat ratio again because of the ammount of physical training I'm doing, but this is accepted by my doctors because I allow it to come back up for 4-6 months of the year. This affords me to eat pretty much everything in moderation. I've currently dropped about 2 pounds in 4 weeks, that sounds like nothing until you hear I was only 118 pounds and 16% body fat. Sitting at 116 I'm back to my winter weight I should hit race weight about Late july of 110-113 pounds and 13-14% body fat (note most women are 24% and you have to have 12% as a woman to survive most elite women athletes range from 13-15% in season and 16-18%off). I'm now uping my food consumption mostly with protein. My race is at the middle of october, I'll have 3 weeks of taper to put about 2 pounds of glycogen stores in during late september before the race I'll eat a lot of bad food then. After the race I'll taper my exercise back to about 3-4 hours a week respectively finish my fall races and accept the winter fluff allowing my body to rest. Currently I'm doing 5+ hours of cardio a week and in early september it will be close to 10.

Now I am not reccomending you start a regiment like this it took me years to become this kamikazi. It is pure insanity especially with a job, a kid, and full time school. However it is my stress relief and fiance says I get seriously cranky without my exercise and he is correct. What I do reccomend is you find a program that you like for eating first. Losing weight is 80% of what you're consuming! So find a protocol you like and stick with it! Accept you wont eat as many things as you like and find new things to love. Produce for instance is delicious and your friend! Second find an exercise program you like and stick with it! Its going to be hard! Learn to love the challenge and stick with it! It never gets easier you just get stronger.

You can lose 50 pounds but you have to believe in yourself and stick to your guns. I lost over that in 18 months after having my daughter. I've gained some back but its muscle as my body fat is lower. Accept that as well its not all about weight either. I'm tiny at my current weight and yet I'm the same size as I was 15 pounds lighter before I put the muscle on the difference is I'm solid!

The biggest thing you need to do is stop thinking about this as for the wedding, but as a gift to yourself. This isnt a diet, or exercise routine this is a life change. Its to better stress reduction habits, healthier eating, and a better longer life. Once you accept that you will succeed. Diets are temporary life changes are permanent and reap results. Believe in yourself and reset your habits you'll be happier and more successful in becoming healthier all around. This is the greatest gift you can give yourself, and inturn to those you love. You deserve this now you have to just believe and stick with it.

  • I would reccomend you read the books "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis, and "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It" by Gary Taubes.  Those books changed my life.  Tomorrow is my one year anniversary of my new way of eating based on these books.  I lost 60 pounds in 6 months and have kept 50+ off for 6 months, and am at a normal BMI even with a few extra pounds.  And oh, by the way, I just celebrated my 50th birthday last month, so losing weight is not a picnic for me.  The pounds that didn't stay off were due to a month long booze-filled epic birthday celebration that I don't regret one bit, lol.  I'm sitting about 8 pounds above my goal weight and am back on track to slide them off long before my December wedding.

I wish you the very best of luck.  I know how hard it is, but you can do it!!!  Have confidence in yourself.  You might also want to check out Pam Young.  She has a book called "The Mouth Trap: The Butt Stops Here".  It's less about what diet to follow and more about understanding the inner kiddie in you that keeps you from sticking to a diet.  It's playful and fun, and I could really relate to her concept of having an inner 5 year old that takes control.  I think some of us are more susceptible to that kind of behavior.  She gives techniques for overcoming.

    Hopefully this will help!
